Asthma and Bermuda: What you need to know before moving.

Humidity had been proven to be the number one factor in bringing on symptoms for asthma suffers.
"Humidity tends to be a stronger link, and generally speaking, the more humid any place happens to be, the more likely it is that someone will have asthma or suffer from attacks on a more regular basis."
Asthma advice:
http://discoverasthma.com/asthma-and-climate.php
It is possible if you live in a dry climate that you may have the conditions to develop full blown asthma after moving to Bermuda.
1 in 5 children in Bermuda have Asthma.
If you are bringing young families please know that as their lunges are still developing these problems will be with them for life. The stats for adults is just as bad. There is a plaque at Docks about how many people died of pneumonia in one year. I vividly remember my dad staring at it (when my parents can to visit) and being concerned for my well -being.
Recommended school for young children with Asthma:
"Warwick Pre-school praised for addressing asthma concerns
If your child has asthma, you may want to have them attend Warwick Pre-school. The Government nursery school on the busy Middle Road in Warwick gets highest praise from asthma specialist Liz Boden who operates Open Airways charity. At the school, Pauline DeShield is the educational awareness team leader. She's held that post for the past five years and during that time the school has made significant changes to help combat asthma. Nine years ago, Mrs. DeShield made frequent trips to the Emergency Ward of King Edward VII Memorial Hospital (KEMH) with her six-year-old son. Then she met Ms Boden of Open Airways. " Liz came to my home, put stuffed animals in the fridge, had me take up the carpet and even suggested to my doctor to put my son on Singulair," she said. "My son was six years old then. He's still prescribed Singulair and he's turning 13. It made a difference in his life." Date: May 13, 2008 | Body & Soul | The Royal Gazette"
Recent clinical studies on Bermuda and Asthma:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1341634/
Asthma can be managed and it is important to watch out for worrying signs as early as possible but there is no cure and it can be progressive.
Latest article (published just 4 hours ago) about having an emergency plan!

Coughing can cause scarring and this is permanent.
This one of the reasons for the chest x-ray...if TB were ever introduced the effects would devastating.
