New story quotes Mr Tomlinson, "If I was told I could go back tomorrow, I wouldn't."

Good call.  Onward and upward.

Far more interesting is the vitriol and infighting in the comments.

Bermudians turning on expats, Bermudians turning on each other... kind of reminds me of the bad old days around here.   wacko

If the day comes to Bermuda not having IB to depend on won't hurt the majority as we have become to rich anyway. Gone are the days when people would grow their own vegetables and have small live animals for food. If we went back to the Island depending on Tourism I think will give Locals the chance to better enhance our ourselves. Stores will have Bermudian people working and catering for Tourism instead of an Asian that knows little of the ins and outs of BDA.

HA!

HA!

And if the above about reverting back to tourism as a mainstay for the economy was wrtten by a Bermudian, then it only indicates how far removed he/she is from the reality of their past. In what has been referred to as the "Golden Age of Bermuda Tourism" stores were staffed by Bermudians. Smith's, Triminghams, Masters - all staffed by locals who were pleasant, knew their stock and were anxious to serve customers well, even if that meant sending them next door to a competitor. As for other jobs, like wait staff and hotel management, these were most often filled by Europeans - Germans, Italians, Austrians, etc. who knew a thing or two about good service and worked damn hard to provide it. Yes, they were working for tips, as their wages were pretty low, but they earned every penny.

As I have said before, the current generation of Bermudians is so far removed from that era that I doubt they could pull themselves together again in time to save the island if the IB industry moves away. Sad, very sad.

An 'argument' for term limits in today's comment section...

Although I fully and wholeheartedly support term limits - this guy's rant really pissed me off! I was in a role that had been vacated by a Bermudian...and it took them well over 2 years to fill it with me...and while I was there I trained a Bermudian to take my place - even though there was resistance on the Bermudian's part - because one thing that I found whilst in Bermuda was that Bermudians did not want to 'move up' or 'train up'- they just wanted more money for the job that they did.

Also up until recently - there was virtually NO competition in the job market - there were soooooooooo many jobs out there - and I can tell you that if a Bermudian had the same skills and qualifications as any ex-pat, they were hired at my company - even if that meant telling the existing ex-pat to leave. And that applied to jobs in every level - they've even let go of VPs because of this.

And furthermore - the Bermudian Youths have way more opportunity than any other group of youths I have ever seen in my life! There are tution programs, the ability to go anywhere in the world for school, free Bermuda college, appreticeship and student programs/jobs coming out the wazoo - and this freaking ridiculous 5 week 'server' course (I dunno, I've done my share of waitressing and bartending and you were lucky in some places to get 5 minutes of training, the rest was all on the job!)...all they have to do is SHOW UP and have the DESIRE to participate or WORK. Something I haven't seen much of...probably because of the inherent sense of ENTITLEMENT that they DESERVE to be CEOs just by walking in the door (at 20 aftre 9 no less).

It is nice to see that - even though the entire Bermuda economy is blowing up in everyone's faces - the ignorance and entitlement is still alive and well (even though that's the main reason for their undoing!)

Go wiki, go wiki...   Grin

I think the golden age of employment for the youth has passed and there is a a lot of frustration at the squandered opportunity.  Suddenly, just showing up isn't enough to get a job in international business.  A job might mean labouring (if you are lucky) or long hours at low pay in the hospitality industry.

So yeah, for sure, ignore the rational arguments about how IB creates high paying jobs for Bermudians and focus on why another Bermudian wasn't trained up for a trade which has fewer jobs now than when the Island was full of workers with lots of money to spend on flashy cars.  Welcome to Bermuda.   wacko
