I'm not sure where you can get it, but i imagine in any of the grocery stores, or liquor stores. There was an article in the Royal Gazette detailing how ministers were looking to ban a bunch of items that they felt was inappropriate. They were just cherry picking (as usual) and i doubt anything will come of it. If you want you can read the article here.
My initial work permit took 3 months, and my renewal took 9. It's really a crap shoot to see when and IF the information is processed. And if it IS eventually approved, you'd better get used to that type of service. Stuff gets done when the person 'responsible' decides they feel like doing something on any given day.
Paget's hit it right on the head. The inconsistency in Bermuda is it's biggest problem. When inconsistency is the only thing consistent, and that's across the board in every department, how can you progress in anything.
It's unfortunate for you Earl as it is obvious you were looking forward to the move. The silver lining is that you would've had to get used to someone making a decision that effects you based solely on how they feel that given moment and not with logic or sense.
Atleast you didn't resign and put yourself in a worse set of circumstances.
Mr. Simmons said the website has a history of hateful comments against the Progressive Labour Party and added: "We have notified the Bermuda Police Service about this threat and asked for an investigation."
I remember that some of the issues that sparked the 'exodus' of a number of members over to the 'other' site, was that we were Anti-PLP over here (which simply wasn't the case). LOL, looks like some people are gonna get what they deserve. Free speech doesn't mean no accountability for your choice of words. It's one thing to criticize, it's another to imply harm.
When i read this initially, i think last week, i was tempted to post and vent at the two fools. But then i realized that it's not all that surprising. The violence in Bermuda has escalated so much in such a short time that incidence like these have become and are going to be pretty common.
So i agree, this is just a sad reflection on how truly terrible it has become on such a small island. Gone are the days where the common bond of being Bermudian meant something.
hmmmm. Hard one to call. On one hand an attempt at tongue and cheek has obviously gone terribly wrong, and on the other hand assassination whether genuine, implied or joked about is a serious matter when it comes to leaders of a country (and rightly so.), so now you have an entire blog community under surveillance. The ones that lose are the ones that had nothing to do with the comment and are now being watched by Big Brotha.
Those other civilizations had education and foreward thinkers as it's foundation. There is no comparison between them and Bermuda. I understand what he's doing by trying to draw parallels but as you've stated Mike, the glory days are long gone. And what is left is so far gone from fixable that they are all in for a tough time and soon.
3-5 years to fix tourism? it takes them that long to realize they've f'd up yet another construction project, let alone right a sinking tourism ship...
The word has been given it's own power over the years, and has evolved tremendously since it was used to degrade african american slaves. It is now a mantle worn by the fools that think its cool to refer to each other with it. They don't realize that they perpetuate the words power by using it so casual. Personally i think it's a clear indication that Hate is still alive and well within our society. What it represents is that it's still easy to use terms that categorize human beings as something other then human beings.
If you knew that calling your mother, daughter, wife, father, son, friend a word would hurt them, chances are you wouldn't use it. So to do that with people that don't look or sound like you speaks volumes. If it's common talk amongst you and your circle of family and friends, then chances are, albeit wrong, it wouldn't offend or hurt anyone. But to come out into the public forum and use it, and to justify it by saying that for you and yours its normal talk is ignorant to the extreme. And dangerous to allow to happen.
A resonable person may not find it offensive, but a sensible person would have a better vocabulary.
Monroy said: "I never meant to hurt anyone. I just want to go back to my four-year-old. "I just want a second chance to prove I'm not that type of person, a criminal."
Mr. Warner responded: "What do you mean you're not that type of person? You're a drug trafficker."
He sentenced both Carlton and Monroy to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment for conspiring to bring drugs to the Island, saying: "This was a cold, callous conspiracy for the money. You said that. You both admitted it.
"The ironic thing is that you said you recognise how nice this place is, but you brought drugs here. We're having major issues caused by drugs, and it must stop."
I'm not sticking up for these individuals. You want to play the game for gain, you gotta be willing to pay the piper if you come up short.
With that said, i find the fact that this same "judge" can give second chances to some of the Bermudian youth who by all rights should also be behind bars. The examples are there, yet he felt the need to make an example of these two...seriously the inconsistencies are alarming.
It's easier to sentence "forners" that aren't close relatives or friends of the family, i suppose.
'If you are coming over the mountain for me, come prepared.'" - Sen. Burch
THIS is the most telling statement of all i've heard from this clown. HIS politics are like a fight, war, combat, etc. etc. HE has his defenses ready, his guns a blazin', and he doesn't care who it is that comes. THIS is who Bermuda has in place to represent them and their interests. THIS is who is supposed to bring working relations together, striving towards harmony and peace amongst local and expat.
A litany of offensive behaviour and as far as i'm concerned (a former expat with squat invested, so it means squat to him and his) NOT A DAMN THING positive said or done since he's been in his position(s). Yet there he remains, and will continue to do so as long as he knows that Bermudians either don't have the sense or the balls to step up and get this FOOL out of office.
Classic bully tactics, and he wraps it up with "if you hadn't used your employers email, it would've been fine." Bullsh!t david, you know you just went that extra step to send a message to those that think you guys aren't doing the right thing here. Dispicable.
Welcom Edwil, you pretty much have it spot on. The crime is on the rise but in the end if you are careful it still can be a positive experience. Bermuda is very small so the places to avoid tend to be small as well. If you stay on your guard in those areas you guys should be fine. Being from South Africa i'm sure you guys are savvy on what to do and what not to do.
Overall we had a great time in Bermuda. It's more dangerous now, but knowing what we know, we would still do it all over again. Keep us posted.
