1  Howyadoin? / Introduce yourself / Re: I love Bermuda so much and would just love to live there! on: July 12, 2009, 09:33:39 AM
Bermuda has become a very negative place to live. The government is led by a bigot who controls by pitting black against white Bermudians. This behaviour is emulated by some of his ministers. Crime is very high for an island this size, gang life has hit here, expats are generally despised by locals especially if you are white, education system is currently crap, and our tax dollars are wasted and spent without conscience, and we are unable to get an answer for where and how it is being spent.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but all that glitters is not gold. Don't let a few visits to the island give the impression that this is paradise. It's small, cluttered, overpopulated, and many of the locals have a myopic view of life.

You want to be Bermudian? Let's see if we can do a citizenship swap, I'll be out of here on the next plane smoking.

Whether this letter is a farce or not, does not excuse the fact that this kind of thing is going on. I have a friend who works at the remains of the Department of Tourism, who has personally taken countless calls from folks who have cancelled their planned holiday here. Take it as hearsay or whatever you like, but it's happening. And saying 'well we don't want them here anyways' is a bit naive.

If he deiberately 'sought out' her ethnicity before responding, that's even worse. Because that means his entire response to her was predicated on her skin color, and not the content of her letter.

Smokinggun raised a good point elsewhere, how did Roban know that the email came from a white woman? By the name? Did she send a picture of herself along with the email? Or did he assume that because it was an anti-Brown email, that it HAD to have originated from a white person??

Newsflash, the premier has a 24% approval rating. In a majority black society, that does mean that a large number of black Bermudians would make up that 76% disapproval rating. So why is there an assumption that everyone who speaks out against Brown is anti PLP and racist?

This too shall pass.
8  Zapnin? / Politics / Re: This too shall pass. on: June 15, 2009, 12:45:39 PM
The 'this too will pass' comment is not without merit. All the crap that's he's done, and Bermudians piss and moan for 3 days, then it's business as usual. So in that regard, he's going off past tendencies of Bermudian people. And if we do nothing on this occasion, he'd be 100% correct.

The telling comment from his mouth recently was when he said 'I have no power. If I did, we wouldn't be having this discussion.' What does that mean? If he was Prime Minister of an Independent Bermuda, that his decisions are absolute??

Wake up Bermuda.

Hi, I don't usually participate in ongoing discussions, prefering to just follow and read what others have to say. I just had to chime in about this situation. I feel so sorry about what these poor fellows have gone through recently, I myself had no nationality for many years until I applied and received my American nationality. I was born and spent my childhood in Bermuda some 30 years ago and out of no fault of my own left the island to acompany my parents to their homeland. I'm not disputing the right of the government of Bermuda to decide who has the right to Bermudian citizenship, it just feels like a very crisp and forceful slap in the face to find that these poor refugees may be eligible for Bermudian citizenship, something that I've always dreamed of, especially since I was actually born in Bermuda, have a British dependant territories passport and a Bermudian birth certificate and I have no rights whatsoever to return to the land that I first set my eyes on. I don't want to start any arguments with anyone here who has a differing opinion than mine, I'm just adding another view point to the discussion. Does anyone else see the Hypocrisy in this?

Paul, your situation is a perfect example of one of the many things wrong here. And you are hardly alone; many Bermudians are raising this issue. People who have lived their entire lives in Bermuda and unable to obtain status.  I can only imagine how scorned you must feel at that.

Welcome to the boards, we're all in the same boat here, reasonable people searching for answers.

If this is Ewart Brown's latest attempt to get the Independence ball rolling, ultimately I think he will fail. At no prior time in Bermuda ( at least not in my 31 years), have we had so controversial a Premier. Right now, the spotlight is squarely on him. At no time previously has Bermuda's people expressed any desire to go Independent, and I believe the Uk will view these 'tactics' by Brown as just one man out of control, and not indicative of Bermuda as a whole. Surely they must have a dossier on him, and it must be growing by the week. With this latest event, with it being all over the news from the US to China, I don't think the UK can stand by any longer. Brown's shenanigans are now in international newsprint, so it's all but impossible to turn a blind eye, and surely there will be calls for some heads to roll.

This is a diplomatic nightmare, I'm in the UK now(studying) and the British press are all over this. Not only are they furious with Brown and co, but also the U.S because they should know better. The U.S, for lack of a better analogy, made a deal with the indian, not the chief. And now China is calling for the return of these men, it will be interesting to see where this leads. But for Bermuda's sake, I hope that this is the proverbial chain around Brown's neck, and hopefully he's hung himself with this one(fingers crossed).

I have two theories.

One, this is a deal between Brown and the U.S Tax lawmakers to look the other way. Less likely because that would mean Brown was trying to do something to benefit Bermuda.

Two, this is in exchange for Kevin Brown's freedom, or at least a SIGNIFICANTLY reduced sentence. More likely as it fits in with Brown's self-serving agendas.

As callous as this sounds, I just wish they'd gather up all these assholes, put them in a room with a bag of weed in the middle, give them machetes and finish each other off. I'm tired of these ****ers holding this island hostage. One of these days, one of those bullets is gonna catch a poor innocent child, or really any innocent bystander. When will this end!!??
14  Zapnin? / Politics / Re: Burt's Blurt: "Divided we stand!" on: May 05, 2009, 11:46:12 AM
With such a low approval rating, isn't this really the PLP ignoring the will of the people when they say they unabashingly support Brown? It's almost like they're waving it in our faces ' we got your vote, now WE'LL tell YOU what's good for you!'
15  Zapnin? / Abuse sucks / Re: Dill's Pickle: Political Interference Part Deux. on: May 05, 2009, 10:45:36 AM
I don't think Dill has anything to worry about. Under the constitution, the Premier doesn't have the power to hire or fire a civil servant. The Governor can, and generally such matters go through the Public Service Commision. So, what we have here is a Premier who either doesn't know the ins and outs of the constitution, or more likely, could care less. When you've gotten away with as much as he has, eventually you truly believe the laws don't apply to you...
