The young man who is fighting his conscription notice has been told his case can be heard in the supreme court. Part of his case is that conscription is not gender neutral and also that the government does not go to reasonable lengths to recruit volunteers before conscripting. Should be an interesting case to follow. What measures are taken to get volunteers?

no measures to my knowledge.  I haven't seen one ad/spokesperson speaking out about joining as a volunteer.  I think they rely on people going out of their way to find out what it's all about.  Seriously, if they did something along the lines of the English TA (Terroritorial Army) ads they would be much better off - give them incentives/decent bonuses/adventure training/job training schemes...............

OK talk to myself.

In the British Army as a TA you can learn a trade/learn to drive - HVG's even and then further it in your own civilian career.

No doubt someone from Govm't will be looking in and thinking what a brilliant idea - i think i'll claim it as my own.......................

I've never known any recruitment drive by the regiment, but lets face it, it wouldnt satisfy the establishment requirements anyway.  I cant wait for these guys to fail. Anyone who has done their duty in the regiment knows what this consciencious objector nonsense is all about. The vast majority of the objectors are the some ones sitting on Bermuda's walls conscienciouly objecting to getting off their lazy a**es and getting a job. I loved these guys when I was in the Regimental Police. And, it was great for the moral of those who chose to do their time to see them getting rounded up and thrown in the guard room. Hats off to those who do their time. They love it or hate it, but they do their duty.

It would still be good to see efforts made to promote the experience in a positive way, it may make the experience more beneficial for those who do service - whether voluntary or otherwise. Maybe it would seem a bit less like penance.

I remember seeing a story last year about a lone female recruit who'd volunteered... it would be good to see more efforts to reach out to young women as well. The regiment could be missing out on people who have a lot to offer.

Valentine's example of the TA is good... I've known volunteers who spoke very highly of their experience and felt that the tough training was well worth it.
