Hey All,
I just got to the island (about a month and a 1/2 ago) and already I feel very isolated living here. You guys are right, if you don't drink it is difficult to meet people. I have signed up for tennis but that doesn't start for another two weeks. Any ideas anyone?

Oh bless you - here have some karma to put a smile on your face.

I think personally it is important as to where you work (if you do) (do you?)

Please feel free to drop me a line on my IM and give me an idea of who you are/age/gender etc as i know of other people that are new to the island that you may want to meet up with.

Keep smiling i promise you it does get better.  Smiley

WELCOME BARELY SANE!

Siging up for classes is a great way to get out and meet people - try the aquarium!

Also, as Valentine suggested...IM me with some more personal details....I'm always looking for new friends too!

This island is a weird weird place. At home, I was a total homebody.....I could stay home for days on end, by myself...here, I can barely stand to be there for an hour...isolation here is magnified!

Welcome BS to...errr...BS.  Well anyway, if you don't drink it's going to be difficult to be in a social forum to meet people i must say.  I mean you could go to the bars and drink non-alcholic drinks.  But unless you want to go to the art shows ($$$) or other functions of the same make, then i guess sports is the only other avenue.  Good luck with the tennis, keep us posted.

Welcome to the site Barely Sane.  Thanks for joining and posting here in the introductions.

I know what you mean about feeling isolated in Bermuda.  You've just gone through a major holiday away from friends and family and the crappy spring weather there sucks.  Being cold in those damp, old stone homes is a miserable way to spend your time.

One thing I did when I first moved there was to explore the Island.  I used my scooter and map and tried to drive on every road.  That was a lot of fun, and it was a good excuse to get me to go out and see different things.  If you don't have a bike, buy the monthly bus pass and try every route.  Use that as an excuse to introduce yourself to someone on each trip - I'm sure you will meet some characters that way!

Check out the activities guide on Bermuda4u.com - the only 'pink sand' site with enough guts to link to Bermuda Sucks

Take Valentine up on her offer.  She's a great lady and will help you get started on the social scene.

Once the weather finally gets better - just another month or so - the Island gets much bigger as you'll be able to start enjoying the ocean and all of the activities there.

Keep us posted!  We'd love to hear how a newbie on the Island is doing.

A great way to spend your time when your loney is find other expats newly arrived on the island then start a rant. You'll feel better instantly!

Just kidding.

I'm always looking for new friends. All my friends always move away Sad

PM me for more info.

PS: The weather is starting to perk up now so all the gray feelings will burn off rather shortly.

PS2: How many of us will die for a day like this come august!

Welcome, Barely Sane... I know what you mean about the social ife/drinking thing. Some ideas... the BMDS put on a lot of productions if you're interested in getting involved in amateur dramatics in some way - there is plenty of drinking in the bar there but the production stuff doesn't require it! Also there are some good volunteering opportunities. Depending on your interests & available time, you could volunteer at The Barn (great 2nd hand emporium that raises funds for MAWI), the Youth Library usually wants people to read stories to kids, the Womens Resource Centre probably welcomes an extra pair of hands & more fundraisers. For most volunteer activities you get a combination of expat and Bermudians, people you often won't meet through work.

If you are sporty, join a gym perhaps. They can be pricy but it is a good way to meet others - I like Magnum myself, very friendly bunch.

Bermuda could use more of a cafe culture than it has - would be very attractive to tourists too.

And of course, if you ever head to Australia, look me up for a gossip Smiley

You may also want to volunteer to dog walk at the SPCA.  That's a good way of meeting people - my wife met several of her friends there.

Just make sure they are not "Racist Dogs" or racing dogs.................................the most bitten are "milkmen" and "postmen".

Welcome to the island, Barely Sane.  Sounds like the rest of the Sucks community have handed out the same ideas I have.  If you are interested in volunteering - the Centre on Philanthropy's website has a great database of current volunteer opportunities.  Some companies also have great intra-mural sports teams for everything from volleyball to softball to soccer.

I see that you've signed up for tennis.  I like to attempt to play tennis and think it is a great way to meet people.  Grotto Bay does 6 week tennis clinics for a decent price.  They're always having one, though I think right now they are only hosting ladies clinics.  However, the pro there knows people on the island who like to have friendly games on all levels so if you want to play and/or aren't able to join one of the clinics, you should give Denis (that's the pro) a call and see if he can help you get a few matches going with players at your level.

Hi Barely Sane.  Sorry to be late in welcoming you but better late then never!  As a person that rarely drinks and really hates the Friday night scene I can sympathize with you.  So if you want to send me a PM, friends are always welcome in my life.
