It is funny when my hoarding husband leaves I get so much glory in disposing items he will just not let go of.  I don't think he even misses things that I dump either.

Ha ha - me too - let's hope our respective husbands aren't reading this!  Cheesy

Wassup - not just you my friend. Even I brought back more than I needed way back when. But today with the cost of customs and how they operate it's a killer. BTW - anyone need two years worth of Maxim?

When and if I leave here it will be the clothes on my back and money in my pockets!

but you will have all those things that you can not get rid of, the pictures, the toys that the children can not bare to part with, the family heirlooms that you now hold in trust for your children, the first card your child made by hand for you, the first gift they gave you with the money they earned on their own, the last gifts given by family members now passed on.  We threw out 3 garbage bags of stuff on Sunday, and packed 3 boxes looked around and it looked just as bad as ever.  Then my Mother-in-Law came up for dinner and had "advice" for me AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Undecided

Hey Wyrd Sister - with all these so called "cheap flights" going back to the UK it might be worth booking a weekend back to the UK and taking loads of luggage with you and offloading - that's what i intend to do - gotta be cheaper than shipping.

Wyrdsister, by the time I leave this island I will most likely have the kids out of the roost and they can have everything they need.  That is my perspective though.  I understand what you are going through.  I left ALOT at my parents home and each time I go home I go through my stuff, look at the memories, smile, and then pack them up again and put it in their attic so it isn't destroyed down here with the humidity.

Good point AAW.  Stuff gets destroyed in Bermuda.  It isn't just the humidity, the close proximity to the very salty sea creates a much more destructive environment than places even more humid.  You know what I'm talking about - that green crystalline stuff that grows on zippers and just about anything else made of metal.

I'll coin the word Bermudafied to describe this and other types of decay.

"..... and finally sir, did you pack this bag yourself?  And has anyone asked you to carry something for them?"

A buddy of mine once got detained by Canadian customs when he flew to Toronto.  They had him pegged as a drug mule; I guess his shaved head and goatee fit some profile other than of a computer guy.

He didn't ingratiate himself with the customs officer when he suggested they were stupid to think that anybody would smuggle drugs from Bermuda where they cost so much more than they do in Canada.  They stopped short of the body cavity search, but they know him as a smart ass now.   Cheesy

Simon, Tushay

I should have thought that through properly before posting that comment.

Sign of the times though. I knew someone back in the late 1990’s who use to have half price tickets flying all round Europe, delivering last minute packages for people. But that was before we were all concerned about security on airplanes.

In the last 6 months my brother-in-law and his wife had to pack up and leave the island (he has been sent to London by his company for the next 3 years).  S-i-l packed up china and stuff to be sent to their new home in the UK and called in Bda Forwarders, when they arrived they insisted that they had to pack everything themselves if it was to be shipped through them.  Now can anyone tell me if they have heard of this before?  Or was this an effort to just get more money from people who look like they can afford it?

They insist on packing it to offer the extra insurance.

They won't insure stuff they have not packed themselves.  When my shipper offered that scam option, I told them I didn't want to pay for a new waterfront building for any of the re-insurance companies, and that I'd be happy to pack my own stuff.   Tongue
