I think one of the best long term projects any government in Bermuda could do would be to get the Bermuda Railroad back in service.  We have the Railway trail...now let's get it running from one end of the island to the other.  The island is maximum 2km wide, so anyone could walk to a stop theoretically...have it run enough that its convenient for anyone to get to work on.

If they could make it so that with stops it took 1/2 an hour to get from Dockyard to Hamilton or St. Georges to Hamilton I think it would reduce traffic by an enormous amount.   Tourists could use it during the day to get around...if you make the train look quaint and old fashioned (or have it pastel colours even) I think it could become a great national symbol.

While I agree it would be nice to have the railway, it could never happen. They couldn't manage the thing back in the 1920s, and there is no way the current government could handle it now. Statistics from www.bermudarailway.net:
  • 22 miles long
  • ended up over $400,000 in debt by 1930
  • the most expensive railway ever built in terms of cost per mile
  • was in existence for only 17 years

VMS - corrected to $400,000 on request from the author

My father started to work on the railway when he was around 14. His dad had recently died and as he was the eldest he had to work to bring home the bacon.
Over the years there has been much talk on a monorail. I always remember the Simpsons episode when Springfield brought the 2nd hand monorail, and Homer had to save the day!  Face it the only thing Bermuda has to look forward too is more traffic and more road rage.

Thanks for the link to that railway site.

I know the Bermuda gov't is completely incompetent currently and can't even bulid a highschool (Berkley) nevermind an island wide public transport system like a monorail/railway.

But wow, I think it would just be incredible for the island if they could actually bulid it.  Congestion, tourism, the environment, road-death accidents, decrease in muggings, decrease in drunk driving (if it ran hourly until 3am at night perhaps..a vomit comet) so many benefits.  Plus the revenue collected from tickets/monthly passes would be a boon for gov't coffers.

I completely agree that it would be a fantastic idea.  I think that the tourists would love it.   And me, I would much rather take the train than the bus!  Cheesy

I think the goverment is probably looking for a new project to dump large sums of money into after "THE MEGA SCHOOL" is finished and we have such a wonderful transportation minister who has finished with the boats - what a good project.

The PTB is losing money (subsidised by tax payers) on the busses and ferries, so more than likely the train would be the same. or the price would be prohibitive. I do love the idea though. My Father has told me many stories of the old train, and I like the idea of an old fashioned train running through, but the reality would no doubt be no where near as cool as I imagine.

You know, some of those tales of such projects and eras are fascinating... is there anywhere in Bermuda they are being collected for current/future generations to read?

Since the old railway trail has development on it, how about something like the Aussie Skyrail?

An overhead, automated gondola system, several stations, alternate 'lines' to connect other areas.

Of course, an Island wide project like that would be a great opportunity for Government to blow even more money than building a school...   Tongue
