Question... if for some reason you were charged with a crime, would you feel confident having it put to a jury? It occurs to me that, with racism seemingly so commonplace, whether directed against blacks, whites or 'other' (as the official forms like to say), not everyone would give a fair hearing. I know this is not only the case in Bermuda - look at the racial profiling of juries in the US for example - but I do see it as an issue made even worse by the 'people that look like' sagas. And if you were on a jury, would you feel able to honestly put race issues aside in your decision-making process? How could that issue be solved?

personally i wouldn't have a problem with race because i don't see colour in people...i see them as individuals.  Unfortunately, i don't think that if was i brought up on charges that i would feel the same confidence.  I think that me being an ex-pat would DEFINITELY have a determining factor for whatever reasons i would be in the court.  I would feel that a strike is against me before i enter.  So it's in my best interest to NOT be in the court system at all.

And i don't see a solution for this...everyone is prejudice....it's human nature to JUDGE before you KNOW...it's how you respond to that prejudice that determines whether you are a good person or a racist...so unless the people change there present attitudes there is no way to alleviate the problem.

Here's to living the straight and narrow.

Good advice CC. Head down, stay on the straight & narrow & hope I'm not in the wrong place at the wrong time. And, I guess, chip away at the problem in the hope it gets better bit by bit.

as expats...of course i'm assuming, by some of your responses, you ARE an expat...that's all we can do.  It only takes one to get the ball rolling, but we aren't given that voice to express ourselves.  Well except on this site...but i don't think the powers that be will take anything from this open forum...although the ideas that i've read coming out of here would DEFINITELY help some of the issues at hand.

just gotta keep on rolling.  And enjoy the Dark and Stormy's, of course.
