not even sure if it is worth paying off all your final bills before leaving the island because they will screw it up one way or another.  Paid off my final phone bill, the week before we left, they either lost the cheque or put it on someone elses account, because they sent us the same bill again, I emailed them, no reply, they sent the same phone bill again, my mother-in-law went and paid it.  Took the cablevision boxes in asked for my final bill told them I was leaving the island, they gave me an amount, I paid it, they sent me another bill.  Mind you this is the co that billed my dead grandmother for almost a year even after several phone calls, finally they stopped sending bills, but a few months later I received a letter addressed to my grandmother from bda credit assoc for a cablevision bill.  Just received a land tax bill, now I am not too sure who is at fault here, lawyers or government but still getting a bill I shouldn't be getting.  There have also been a few other small bills which despite being paid we keep getting demands for.

Yes that can be very frustrating... but at the risk of stating the obvious...

all done, it is just the frustration of having to keep going over the same thing, and still being ignored.

Yeah, Cablevision are notorious for billing problems.

Another problem is mail forwarding... I set it up before I left and never, ever, received a single forwarded piece of mail, in spite of knowing some mail was sent.

Thanks for the warning folks.  I've been going round to all the utilities and asking them to read the meter on the date our lease expires.  I'm also going to take meter readings myself and get the Landlord to confirm the readings in case there is a problem later.  Belco seemed to be the most on the ball.  Don't have Cablevision so can't comment.  Watlington Water seemed rather sleepy and not really taking in what I was saying but it is only a tiny bill so I'm not too worried.

Yes Wyrdsister, it is having to keep dealing with something you think you've put to bed that is so frustrating.

As for redirecting post, yes I'm dreading that.  Even moving to another address on the island can be a nightmare.

Thank heavens for email and internet banking Undecided.

How long can we keep bank accounts open?  Someone said if there is no activity they are closed automatically.

Really simple solution....

Open second account if you don't already have one...  and then transfer money from one to the other online periodically... they'll stay open FOREVER!!!  Grin

That's gotta be worth a Karma point??  Grin

Exactly LP...  you can have them both on the same online login account, you set up an automatic payment/transfer between accounts that runs once a month or so. Just move a small amount back and forth. I know a few people that do it.

the redirecting of our mail is working, but then it is being sent on to my mother-in-law in bermuda who either sends it to us or chucks it out.  Belco were the easiest to deal with, we moved out, stayed in a hotel, and they did the meter reading, but we still had to wait a month or more for the final bill, the same with Bdawaterworks.

Thanks Folks!  OK K2 the furry one...sounds like a solid solution.

BTC were a laugh today.  RO calls BTC: (usual intro howyadoin etc) We're moving out on 31st can you cancel our line, pretty please?  BTC: Yes we'll do that.  RO: What time will that happen?  BTC: 8am.  RO: er, can't it be done at the end of the day we may need the phone on our last day.  BTC: Oh no we can only do it at 8am.  RO:  OK can we cancel on 1st September.  BTC: Oh no, that's Saturday.  RO: Why can't you do it on Saturday?  BTC: We don't work on Saturday.

And they call it a SERVICE Huh

now thats funny because when I called to cancel the phone I requested that they close the account on June 6, over a week from the date I was calling, I was told sure no problem, they cancelled the phone at that exact moment of my call leaving us without a phone for over a week.  Thank god for cell phones.  Idiots.

I had mixed experiences with BTC... getting a business phone system set up was challenging and just as I was contemplating holding the next engineer hostage so he couldn't just leave like the previous 5, he atually turned out to be a real hero and sorted everything out by sheer persistence (and knowing what he was doing). So, if you keep trying, maybe you'll get lucky and encounter this guy instead of the others... there are some good people there too but I feel sorry for them having to deal with the stuff-ups of their colleagues!

I am still getting Land Tax bills even though I sold the house 6 months ago and the final bills were settled by my lawyer.

Send them a bill in return from your accountant.  Tell them you have had the situation investigated, found the error was theirs, and therefore are passing on the costs you have incurred.
