Apparently if you work in Bermuda for less than 6 months, you are entitled to get your social insurance contributions paid back to you. In theory this is supposed to be done via your employer if they haven't already paid the govt dept, so that could be a sticking point. Anyway, for anyone escaping in the first half year, worth a try - and let us know how you get on.

P.S. and if you escape the island, I understand you can claim you social insurance back when you retire....not that that helps me...

hell it's hard enough getting anything out of government at the moment, imagine trying to do it when you reach retirement age, from a country thousands of miles away and you've lost half your marbles!! Cheesy

What you can do, before you leave, is talk to the Department of Whateverness, and have your social insurance contributions in Bermuda transferred into the Scoial Security system back in your homeland.  This at least is the case for Uk citizens, not sure about other nationalities.
