I find this all very amusing.  Each time I have family, friends or business associates visiting and they hear the honking they are pleasantly amused about the whole situation of saying hello through our horns.  It is unheard of in the states where they use it as a warning or anger.  One time a family member tried it where they lived and the states and in turn did the a finger... the middle one.

We Bermudians live with a deep sense of insecurity, that is manifested by the greeting honk. If you do not honk, and the person you know catches a glimpse of you passing, you will be greeted by, "you ignorin me?" the next lime you meet. That is why the greeting games work so well. If you honk randomly, other drivers will be S*****ing themselves trying to honk before you are out of earshot, lest they be cut off socially by whomever it was they failed to acknowledge.
Irritating ritual? Yes! Here to stay? Absolutely.

Too me it will always be really unpleasant to hear constant horns going off.? Its not designed to be a nice friendly greeting, its designed to warn of an impending crash.? Ever hear of waving, people?

I'm putting this in my "dumbass things Bermudians do that annoy ex-pats" column!? If there is any room left on my paper.

LOLOLOL..... Lord, I apologize for my "dumbass things Bermudians do that annoy ex-pats" column....

I have learned that no one heeds the "warning honk".... I have seen people back into and pull in front of another vehicle... while honking back to greet the person they just HIT.........

I certainly know what you mean by being b****ed at when you see friends or distant family if you don't honk when they honk at you.  On numerous occasions I got comments of "what you didn't me the other day?  You didn't honk back."  Now I try to make sure that even though I have no clue who is honking when someone goes by me I honk anyway.

Yes the greeting thing is very important here, it shows others whether you like them or not.   Roll Eyes
