Rummy, I really don't want to get into this with you, as we all know where it leads, but...

No.

Are you actually saying that we should just shut up and let people say crap like this?
"it exists and comes in many shapes and forms" is not an answer to my question.

I want to fight racism. I want to stop it as best I can. I want it gone. You don't seem to have a problem with it, based on past remarks, but I do.
I don't want racism in any form in my country. This is my home and I don't want that poison here.

So, thank you very much for your "input", but I think I'll dismiss it and keep doing what I'm doing.
And I don't want to get into it with you but you seem bound and determined to knock everything everyone says. I applaud your stance on this but freedom of speech is just that. As you have stated numerous times..."i'll ignore it'.

This is what discussion is all about and I was not comming down on you in the way you may think. If I can't comment on your comments then what the hell is the point of even participating? It's not personal, it's a comment and I am sure you deal with these everyday, just like the rest of the world.

Guys,

I understand that for a long time on this blog it was just a small group of characters and people had their signature traits, methods of posting and even dialects, but it still is the nature of what is being said or shown that us newer posters should be able to comment upon.  If we are to leave all of the old timers alone and let them post what they want with out comment from us newbies then let us know that plus any other unspoken policies that this blog may have.  Personally I find Biggie's buffoon statement offensive and sincerely hope that it was not directed towards me.  If it was then meet me in the tank mate ... I have a lot to say.

OK. So your not a 'white bermudian'? Neither am I. Send Biggie a PM, get their thoughts. As for the "old timers", does that mean age or membership wise.

Just testin Darky, juzz tastin.......ya mighy mate ya no...........as for the "newbie" part, thats here nor there. Your contributions have outweighed your love of 'shark fin' soup. (try mullet roe) better for the lower ping pong area's.

There's no "old timer's", "there's no "unspoken policies", what there is is a lot of circular discussions going on.  Nobody is discouraging comments on what other's comment on.  It's just that some posters come off a bit rough, and some of their comments seem offensive.  It may or may not be the case, the bottom line is they can post whatever, just the same as it can be dissected to pieces by some posters who feel the need to question everything they don't understand.  There's no right or wrong, there's only discourse.  With that said, some will not feel like their questions have been answered and frustration sets in.  Here is where we get into some issues, as IMO more personal attacks seem to be popping in with more frequency.  Say what you will about the subject, and if the subject is a person then tread lightly as we have seen where unwarranted comments about others has gotten us.

Respect should be the first order of business, everything else will fall into place afterwards.

As has been pointed out before, free speech is not in fact, free. With it comes accountability and the need on occassion to defend one's believes. As I believe is the case here with biggie. Personally, if somebody were making false allegations about me, as has been the case in the past, then you can be damn sure that I'm going to rebut the allegations. As somebody has pointed out in there avatar, 'no comment' is a comment.

When it comes to individuals, I would agree with CC that there is a need to tread lightly, however that does not negate the fact that if an individual simply posts controversial or inflammatory posts and then simply walks away, then he or she will continue to be viewed as either a troll or accused of being evasive. There is a difference between free speech and fire-bombing threads with the sole purpose of disrupting posting.

Freedom of speech works both ways.

I have just as much right to say what an a$$hole comment the OP was as he does to make it.
I don't understand how it can be interpreted as anything else.

Freedom of Speech only that anyone can say anything they want (Yeah, yeah, "Fire in a theatre" and all that, you lot know what I'm saying).
It DOESN'T mean that no-one's allowed to say anything about it.

I think that some in this thread who have talked about 'freedom of speech' are misunderstanding things somewhat. I would never deny the right of someone, no matter how racist or otherwise bigoted they may be, to express their views. Hell, as my sig acknowledges, freedom of speech is all about offensive speech. Criticizing someone for their apparent bigotry (as I have done with regard to 'Biggie') is not to deny them the freedom to express their views, though. 'Biggie' can say whatever the hell he wants, but if I want to criticize and ridicule him for his bigotry, I will.

CC - Just another point, I recognize that a Moderator, a fine line must exist between deciding what is offensive and what is free speech. If I constantly referred to all blacks as ****s and all whites as honkys, then I would expect to be banned promptly because as much as I may have the right to say whatever I want, the reality is that this is offensive language and unacceptable in a forum.

Personally, I find that biggie's posts come as close as possible to this line and may be better received (or at least understood) were there some accompanying sensible postings or dialogue instead of just a poorly-photoshopped picture or inflammatory remark, that many find offensive. In conjunction with his seemingly racist posts, he's just made reference to the BIU leadership as monkeys, which could again be viewed as racist - given the propensity of the poster to such inciteful remarks. And never has he/she denied allegations of racism etc. So where does it stop?

CO - it IS a fine line. And at times i find it difficult to wade through what is said and "modify".  I try not to do that at all unless it's blatent.  I, by definition, have to give the poster the benefit of the doubt.  I cannot recall, as i've posted numerous times, my opinion of the present Gov't, but i may have called them monkeys myself.  Now obviously there's no racist undertone coming from me, but some may interpret that as such.  Where and more importantly how can you draw a line?  If someone is directly called something, i'll step in (case in point, OneEye calling people on this site, and one individual in particular something specific).  I'll let the person know what's been done and a little blurb about respect and all that.  But the bottom line is we are all adults and should act accordingly.  This is obviously not always going to be the case....so be it.

UE/Loki - Say what you will about the post, no one is saying that you shouldn't or can't.  But you can call it an A$$hole comment without actually calling it an a$$hole comment.  It's just that when you attack the comment, and not necessarily the poster it's still easy for a person to bring up their defenses and then the thread goes no where...hopefully that clears up some of your questions.

On a side note Rums - as we've seen where this has gone, over and over agian, please, for me, try to use the persons online name and not their real name.

I have no idea what you're talking about.

What I was referring to is the argument that comes up all the time when talking about free speech, that of "You can say whatever you like, within certain limitations." Yelling "Fire" in a theatre and the like is not protected under free speech in many places, as it can be dangerous. I was trying to nip that in the bud by explaining that I understood those limitations when I said "Freedom of Speech only that anyone can say anything they want"

I have no idea what ulterior motive you were trying to read into it.
