How awesome is this! A top dog in the UK involved with ethical standards in stem cell reasearch is lambasting Premier Brown and the Bermuda government over the Brown-Darrell Stem Cell Clinic. And the top dog just happens to be a... Bermudian!!!

http://www.theroyalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7d793c330030000&sectionId=117

I have some friends in the field and when I first asked them if they were familiar with Stemedica they all said no. After looking at the various web-sites that the company has up they said it looked shady.

And who says we dont have any super duper Bermudians working in some serious fields.

I wondered how long it would be before some real governing body got wind of this!!!

Stemedica, other than sell "vitamin" supplements don't see that they really do anything!!! I was thinking with all the "eastern block" staff that maybe our ex-DPP should be looking at this..

Actually have to give credit to Heather Woods for doing a good job on pulling the story together and getting Mr. Tucker and the other doctor's views. K2 Heather.

I wouldn't necessarily think that Ewart Brown is doing anything nefarious, but having looked at some other ventures that his partners have been involved in, I have concerns about them and precisely what they're up to.

Back to the stem cell research thingy.

The origins of stem cell research are all good, but............ my opinion of Doc Brown is that he's just in this for a quick buck and because he knows its the way forward.  I'd be very dubious about anything that this man takes on as a pet project.

On what charges, exactly?

Dr Tucker highlighted one of my big "problems" with Doc's stem cell clinic. That is that Bermuda has no controls in place, nor staff to enforce those controls in relation to this sort of cutting edge experimentation. My feeling is this is exactly the reason Stemedcia is coming, then need a place without regulations, somewhere they can do almost whatever they want. Somewhere they have control of the G'ment.

That is PRECISELY why they are coming. We have no regulation on this whatsover and, guess what? They've hooked up with someone who is in a position to ensure that there will be no regulation under his watch.

Yes indeed. Exactly as you both point out. The only reason these companies set up shop outside of the US and oother certain jurisdictions is because they know they will not be able to operate in said jurisdictions. But the main issue that Bermuda should be concerned with, other than we are quickly developing a reputation similar to places like Cuba, is just what Dr. Tucker has pointed out. As mentioned at the start I wouldn't want to be living next to the clinic... you never know what the cat might bring home.

UE - how about breaching the immigration & labour policies of the island? By all rights a Chief Executive Officer cannot be a consultant to the very company he/she is supposedly running. Unless there's a whole bunch of Consultant CEO's running about Bermuda that I'm not aware about I'd say he's complicit in trying to cheat the system.

Thanks, Smokes. I didn't know that. Why hasn't anyone called them on it? If that's true (and I'm not saying it's not) how is he able to do it without being zapped for it?
