The fact that they did not advertise for the job in Bermuda gives me pause. Are there no Bermudian lab Managers or Technicians at KEMH that are capable of doing the job? Better book my flight for my next check up. Undecided

Well, that suprised me. The Premier just went on record to "interpet" the Stemedica/Brown-Darrell recruitment advert in Canada.

He just distanced himself from Stemedica in todays RG.

http://www.theroyalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7d7beb730030006&sectionId=60

Maybe all is not well in paradise after all?

Or, to put it another way "Business is Business, but being Premier is bigger Business by far"? I wonder what the Russians, sorry Stemedica will make of this?

He didn't do a good job of distancing himself.

From the ad:

Quote
"Position is to begin on or before December 1, 2007, and requires full-time residency in Bermuda."

From Dr Brown:

Quote
"Nothing in the Stemedica ad said that the advertised job would begin in Bermuda by December 1 and it will not.

"The press has mistakenly focused on the date, which has made them reach mistaken conclusions as to when a posted job might actually begin in Bermuda."

Err, how does it not say the job will begin in Bermuda by 1 Dec?

Oh dear God, this is funny.

Might be that I have finished drinking dinner, but he really is making this far to easy for us....

Whoever wrote the Gazette article doesn't understand how Immigration works either.

Quote
We asked the Premier: "Are you saying Brown-Darrell will advertise for someone at the clinic, then select the right candidate, then compare that candidate with Stemedica's chosen candidate to select the best one, then get a work permit for that person — and then start work on or before December 1 (this Saturday)?"

While the author of the article is focusing on the time line they've missed the import of the bolded text. If there is a Bermudian applicant that meets the letter of the requirements in the ad Immigration insists the employer offer them the job. It's not a case of whether or not the expat is better or not. It's whether a qualified Bermudian has applied. Full stop. The exceptions occur when the position is sufficiently senior that Immigration will grant approval for a work permit without advertising. This position isn't that senior (and with the exception of the requirement for a degree in cell biology I expect there are inumerable lab technicians at the hospital that could easily do the job).

It's a good thing he ordered all those new buses. He's even throwing the Russians under now. And from what I understand they don't like getting thrown under the bus. Undecided

True. But their reactions tend to be very predicatable.

Re: Brown-Darrell - a shame?

On so many levels this is more appropiate.

Leaving aside for a brief moment the need for strict licencing, I fail to see how anyone can be an effective Premier with so many outside interests. Surely the job deserves undivided attention? Add to that the need to avoid conflicts of interest...

Tourism Minister, Transportation Minister, Premier, private consultant, power broker, businessman, doctor, world traveler, man about Gotham, entrepreneur, celebrity, golfer...... Heaven knows what else. I suppose family man fits in there somewhere.

If he could just head up a rock and roll band he would qualify as Bermuda's own Buckaroo Banzai. And we already have a supporting cast of aliens.

Good one! (Although I'm not sure everyone will get it; BB is a bit of a cult item. I, of course, have my own official BB headband! :-)

Gee thanks Blankman. That was swell. I think I just experienced a flashback, or was it a hot flash - whatever.

And Noel, is that Coward?, we'll want a picture in that headband.

Awww, you don't like 'Buckaroo Banzai'? It's a classic, much better than 'Dark Star' ("Teach the bomb .... phenomenology!")! But that BB trailer that Blanks turned up really sucks; http://www.youtube.com/v/d682xV0n1YY is much better. ("Laff-a while you can-a, monkey boy!")

Nope - but it is my real name...

Mirabile dictu, I actually found it! It was in a cardboard box in my basement, none the worse for wear. (Probably because it looks to be 100% polyester! ;-)

Alas, I'm too shy to post my picture here, in any gear, whether tacky or not. However, my faithful friend and sidekick Wags volunteered (actually, she was too lazy to protest :-), and so Here's Johnny!
