Fellow Expats:

So I finally made the leap and decided to leave the island. After hearing many horror stories as to the expense of shipping stuff off the island, I can happily announce that it isn't that bad provided you ship allot.

After having several house sales, and picks through to throw whatever isn't really required out, I wound up taking 511 lbs down to the airport today. Total bill, $1151 to Calgary, Canada.

In talking to agent down there, the more you ship, the less it is - to the effect, that if I shipped 220 points, it would have wound up being the same price.

To conclude, when going.. ship whatever you will need in your new country. It isn't that bad at all... and really.. my most memorable and nicest experience after a number of years was shipping my stuff back home!

Good to know, seeing as my estimated time of departure is closing in.  Thanks for the info BdaS. And good luck with the new (or old) stomping grounds...keep us posted.

Not to worry, Calgary Sucks too... but their website isn't as much fun as ours.   Cool

Instead of using Bermuda shipping agents look online for companies that regularily ship to Bermuda from the country you are going to. More stuff gets shipped to Bermuda than leaves as a lot of ex-pats dump there stuff so there are a lot of containers going back empty. Plus pick a company that is likely shipping consumables and stuff for the shops. Some of the local shipping companies book this space and charge a massive mark-up for their service.

The average container is 20ft so you can easily share it with other people leaving the island.

The only downside is that your stuff needs to be ready at their schedule which may not be the day you are leaving. So you need to plan as far in advance as possible. Which mean your stuff may leave a month before you do.

Cheapest way to get your stuff off the island and you get to pack it yourself!

The first shipping quote I had was more than the value of my things.

I got a quote for $800 which included furniture unfortunately the next slot would have been a month after my departure. So my choice was either pay $4,000 - a lot more than I earned in a month.

In the end I went with the one suitcase option. I had a rule of not buying anything really nice or expensive - so no great loss.

Inflatable furniture would have been even better.  Cool
