Have been lurking here for a while. Was born here(from St George) but left for UK in '79.came back here 5 years ago.Never really intended to come back but my mum was ill so I had no choice.Biggest mistake I made was to decide to stay on after she passed way.
Done alot of travelling over the last 27 years.Lived and worked as a a guest worker/expat in M. East/Far East. Bermuda's just about the strangest place I've ever lived.I thought I had a 'handle' on the place by being born/raised here,WRONG! big time.Cannnot seem to 'fit in',really used to bother me but two years ago I decided, bollocks to it! Can't fit in,don't want to anymore, can't be arsed! The sooner I create some distance between me and Bermuda the better. Thanks God for long distance call plans and Zoom,no mates here!
This place is 'Living history' not because of the quaint houses, forts and other items of historical interest but the fact that many Bermudians, both black and white, and not a small number if expats seem to be stuck, or find themselves in some sort of 'time warp' when it comes to attitudes, predjudices, tolerance, acceptance and vision(or lack of it).

Welcome Retrobob,

Strong opinions from a unique perspective.  It'll be interesting to see what spice you can add to the discussions here.  So are you planning on staying long?

Welcome Retrobob, glad to have you here. Yes, Bermuda seems like stepping back in time often when it comes to attitudes and behaviours - not that old fashioned is always bad but it can sure be frustrating. I look forward to hearing about your experiences and escapeplans.

Experiences, where do I start? As to an escape plan, I'm waiting to see what the Dear Leader's going to do after the  election.I was left a house which  I was hoping to develop the basement into an apartment but if it switches up toward  independence then I'll leave off and get out of here ASAP.
Here's a recent experience for you:  TCD examiner/tester peeling off the Union Jack sticker from the back of my car.

"TCD examiner/tester peeling off the Union Jack sticker from the back of my car."  YES!! The ****ing TCD... the most useless, irritating, ignorant, bullying, time-wasting, inconsistant, un-fair, power-crazed-small-minded-examiners-helping-their- friends-and-family-under-the-table-but-give-honest-people-a-hard-time... but-allow-over-size-heavy-truck-Hummers-&-Escalades-into-the-Island-for-personal-transportation-for-the-elite... but-make-it-difficult-for-small-businessmen-to get-an-honest-light-truck-permit, white elephant, em-effer, Gu'mint Department in Bermuda's 500 history!!!  And did I mention, a huge pain in the ass, and thorn in your side to boot!!!  They are the WORST!!...I destest them and everything they stand for... which I haven't been able to figure out yet!!!

No bumper stickers allowed here mate... it's another ****ing useless, ignorant, inconsistent RULE from your friends who SAY they "control" the number of cars, trucks and bikes on the road in Bermuda -- and your window tint.  Great ****ing job Randy...!!!  Get a real job will ya.... Shocked Sad Angry

Let me say how pleased I am that you have finally emerged from the bag Mystic.  As you now appear to be at least willing to show part of your face, allow me to offer up this avatar, which I think shows both some face and depicts fairly accurately your personality!!  'D

WOW!!! I think I pushed a button my mentioning TCD! Lets share the 'love' and not spare my other favourite Bermuda public servants,HM Customs. Now there's a group for you! About every fortnight I pickup some merchandise for my wife at the Airport Customs shed.I'm easy to find as I'm the guy doing deepbreathing exercises and Tai Chi in the car park.if you dare to come close you can hear me quietly repeating my mantra, 'Must not choke rude, irritating customs officer ,must not choke..............' etc. I've been going down to the Airport customs shed for almost a year now and I'm happy to report that thay're actually beginning to give me eye contact now! maybe be around Xmas they might actually use 'mister' or even my first name. Wad'ya think?
