Smokescreen ... Bait & Switch ... call it what you'd like.

Standard Operating Procedure:  Table a proposed regulation/law with purposely built-in flaws that incite outrage & debate.  Bring it to the front-burner of everyone's concience.  Take great pains to say, "Oh you're absolutely right, lets change <this or that>" ... look how agreeable we are.

All the while the ACTUAL Law is sitting on someone's hard drive in it's almost final form, ready to go into Law.

Hrumph, hrumph.

You know I'm just running through the numbers at my place of employ and it hit me ... I am singling out and counting the "black" employees ... it doesn't feel right ... I feel dirty ... what about all the other races? ... also halfway though I realised I had made a mistake ... I had counted the "black" ex-patriots as well and this law does not apply to them.

So its not a race issue really its solely about "black Bermudians" ...

Edit:  Okay now I'm really at a loss ... I have one white employee married to a black spouse and one black employee married to a white spouse ... both are Bermudian and have children around the same age ... both perform the same role in the organisation ... as far as I can tell both have roughly the same background and family income level ... assuming they both perform at the same level on the job ... does this mean I have to promote the black Bermudian employee?  I presume so ...

Fantastic! Let's not penalize ALL workplace discrimination, but just discrimination against blacks. What a bunch of bullshit.

... unless you can find a person of African descent in your heritage...

Since humanity supposedly started in African and spread throughout the world from there, everyone is of African descent.

Very true Blankman. BUT.....the genetics have proven that they were not BLACK. Too many hours in the sun...dark skinned, intermarriage, et al.
Well...there goes my beliefs with regard to the Bible.

Just because and most accept that this is where humanity started, does not mean we or them came from a 'Black man'.

Heavens...God is sitting back and telling the crew......................................it was'nt suppose to turn out like this.................................

Just another ploy by the 'black head hunters' to boost moral prior to an election. Vote for us. You'll go to the top, we will beat down that Honkie man who has held you back since you landed here in 1609.

My 1st thought was that this act in it's self was in contravention of the Human Rights Act.... But then I remembered this little gem of an amendment that was slipped through in 1998....

6A (1) Notwithstanding the provisions of this Part, the
Commission may, upon conditions or limitations and subject to
revocation or suspension, approve in writing any special plan or
programme, by the Government or by any agency thereof or by
any person, where such plan or programme—

(b) is designed to increase the employment of
members of a group or class of persons because
of the race, colour, nationality or place of origin
of the members of the group or class.

They don't care about the "Gee", just want him to cut the grass.  Why is this only addressing the disproportionate numbers in I.B.?  What about the lack of whites in all government departments from the top down?  Bermudian whites must truly be an endangered species as I don't see them anywhere.  They're not in the banks, post offices, works and engineering, parks, hotels, etc., etc.,  where are they?   Huh

I have to wonder if sometime in the future we will be paying an outrageous amount of money for a study to be conducted on the lack of confidence of the Black Bermudian in the work place.   How many hard working, educated black Bermudians will there be in a couple years time wondering if their new management position was earned, or are they filling a “Quota”.  That really has to play with ones psyche.  Very sad indeed.

hm.

i think i understand why y'all would be annoyed, since by definition this demands race-based preference; which on the surface feels like you're fighting fire with fire. instead of extinguishing anything, it could just blow the flames into the hands and heads of a new group.

that said, i'm not sure you really understand why actions like this are important. frankly, i wouldn't expect you to, the concept is...fundamentally separate from most of y'alls experiences, i suspect. in any event, this sort of thing is necessary to balance out the inherent preference for white people and as such the built in distaste for black people that exists, institutionally. if you look across the entire landscape of IB, it's obvious that the number of white bermudians in the sector is disproportionately higher than their black bermudian counterparts. this exists for a teeming clusterufck of reasons, which is why a whole mess of solutions need to be applied.

before you write the proposed legislation off totally, i think it's important to consider a couple questions:

a) do you believe there have ever been/are black people who've been turned down for an IB job/promotion solely because they were black?

b) do you believe there have ever been/are white people who've been given IB jobs/promotions instead of equally qualified black people simply because of race?

i'm asking these questions historically and in a contemporary sense.

if yes to both, then what's the problem?

if no to either, then you're not looking at the stats. obviously, there are easy arguments about causation vs correllation that can be floated. however, when the access split sits clearly and comfortably along racial lines, the ramifications are pretty undeniable. and accordingly, the necessary action.

i think, anyway.

*shrugs*

deuces and that.

Leave IB out of the picture here Thaao... this act covers all.. Including all the G'ment Ministries, mom and pop bakeries, your friendly neighborhood gas station... EVERYONE!!!!

a) do you believe there have ever been/are black people who've been turned down for an IB job/promotion solely because they were black? [

b) do you believe there have ever been/are white people who've been given IB jobs/promotions instead of equally qualified black people simply because of race?

a.. Yes, but I also know some white Bermudians that have been turned down for promotion because they are Bermudian... WHO THE F*%# is gonna help them..  not this abomination of an act!!!

b. I also know black folks in G'ment that have been promoted over a MORE QUALIFIED and EXPERIENCED white people...

so what's the point??? Other than to totally piss off the employers... and to get more votes in the upcoming election.... chase IB off the island??

hokay. fine, we'll do broad. which is equally appropriate, since in a broad sense, black bermudians have less opportunities/resources than white bermudians. again, this isn't rhetoric or anecdotal hysteria. just the facts.

re: your a) - those white bermudians are protected against that sort of discrimination under the umbrella of our existing human rights legislation. obviously, so are the black folk, who will now be doubly covered by the new act. but just as obviously, the systemic distaste for blacks goes further than any sort of nationalist preference.

re: your b) - that's annoying as hell, but(and i know you're gonna loathe this), comparatively, just a hole in the proverbial bucket. blacks were only allowed to actually work in the civil service around 50 years ago. let that roll around in your mouth for a while, like, really taste what that means in terms of precedent and expectation and preference and legacy.

sometimes, modern black empowerment does come at the expense of good white individuals. however(i know you're gonna loathe this too), in the big picture, that's acceptable collateral damage. the goal is to change the system, shifting the way the world interacts with itself. along the way, some of the world's residents are gonna be displaced by definition since so many borders that've needed moving for centuries are getting redrawn. that sucks, but this is the planet our parents made, y'know?

at this stage, there's no other way to get black folk level than to give them preferential treatment over white folk; most of whom are probably equally competent, nice, sensible people. it's horrible, but can you think of any other way to REALLY balance things out in a collective sense without...i dunno, tipping the scales?

if you can, i'm quite honestly all ears. it would be inherently better, on the most central level, to raise people without having to sacrifice anyone else. things being as they are though, i can't see how that would be possible.

If it can be proven that a white Bermudian was given a job over a Black Bermudian solely based on color, then why is that they haven’t taken this up with the Human Rights Commission and had it investigated?  Isn’t that what the HRC is supposed to be doing?

Thaao, are you saying that black folk don't care how they get theirs, just as long as they get it?

By the way, I do stand corrected.  South Africa has an affirmative action program designed to protect the majority.
