Welcome, Twiggie. Good to have the perspective of a 'lifer.' I'd love to hear about some of the changes you've observed over the years in Bermuda, from an insider's point of view.

Thanks Reality. Congratulations on your up-coming role as a mother! I'm going to need a lot of help here! I'll be 87 in three weeks and am still a little new to computers.  My great-niece helped me to do my first post. Yes, I've seen Bermuda change from the horse and buggy days to the indecent goon-owned oversized cars to the present, and all in-between including the Bermuda Railway!  One of my first jobs in 1943 was a reporter on the Mid-Ocean News when they were on Front Street opposite #6 Dock!

Thanks Twiggie, it is an exciting time for me. Any help we can give, don't be afraid to ask (Mike is the expert but I usually manage to muddle through quite well).

Even in the newspaper industry itself there have been so many changes. I don't know if Bermuda's print media updated at the same time as bigger countries but my mum worked in a big newspaper office in the UK and has some tales to tell.

Regards to your great niece Smiley

I'll be 87 in three weeks ... I've seen Bermuda change from the horse and buggy days ... to the present, and all in-between including the Bermuda Railway!

Sounds like my parents - both were born in 1915, and lived through great changes (e.g. my dad had colour film of the first flying boat to arrive here; he was an early colour film enthusiast).

So what do you make of all the changes? Some for the better, and some not, I am sure, but if you got pick one or the other, which would you pick?
Your choice of our worst mistake? (I'd probably say the introduction of the private car, but I'd have to think for a bit. I never saw those wonderful white coral roads, but I've seen them in pictures.)

Interesting that they were hiring women at that point in time. Was that anything to do with the wartime situation, or were female reporters something one saw back then?

You can see Twiggy (the model) on America's Next Top Model... one of those delightfully bitchy shows that is a guilty pleasure.

No, S.G. I'm not the REAL Twiggie, the Brit model of yesteryear. But my nicknames included Lighthouse and Bean Pole, you get the picture?

There were female reporters here in the 1940's, but from USA and Canada. I was the first Bermudian female. As for the changes, I'd say the worst change was the introduction of party politics. Before P.P. we voted for the individual we thought would do the best job. On the other hand I didn't agree with the policy back then of voting privileges given only to land owners.

Who me?  I was so shy, believe it or not.....those names referred to my being 5' 10" tall and 125 lbs (6' 2" when I wore my four inch heels! but my first hubby was 6' 6" tall and very slim. He had to endure tall nicknames too, and lame jokes.
It wasn't easy at first asking nosy questions when interviewing people.

Well if you want lame jokes you've come to the right place. But I can only post 1 karma point per hour so the payout for putting up with me is going to be pretty low.  Smiley

Now talking about nosy questions. Have you been keeping up with Premier Brown's handling of the press and his constant dodging of questions? Do you recall anyone else being that way when you were reporting?

Are you kidding? Back in those days Bermuda's politicians were educated and well manered people. Ok, so the strutting doc is educated, but has obviously forgotten any manners he was taught. The rest of his lot can't even properly read the prepared speeches they were given. Russia had Ivan The Terrible, and England had Ethelred II The Unready. Bermuda has U-Rat The Evader. I've never known anybody else like him when it comes to ignoring questions from the press. It's enough to send a reporter running to the nearest watering hole!
