Long time lurker, first time poster and all that . . . . since I posted a couple times earlier this evening, I figured I'd finally out myself.   Cool

The hubby and I moved to Bermuda last fall and now that the honeymoon phase is over (not only in the marriage, but in the love affair with Bermuda as well  Wink ), I've taken a greater interest in Bermudian politics, issues, etc.  Unfortunately, theres not a lot of outlets for my disappointment and outrage of the current political situation, so I'll need to get my kicks online.  [We're from the States and I'm normally very outspoken in my criticism of Bush, so this having to stifle my opinions has been pretty rough.]

Anyway, I just hope to be able to contribute to this community that has been entertaining me the last few months.

Yep, Bush has also made his appearances on our site. What do you make of the upcoming election? Do you believe that Hillary/Obama will lose significant number of votes based on gender/race respectively? I know Hillary Clinton ha sbeen making healthcare a prominent issue... what other issues do you feel will be deciders? Even here in Aus (election next month) I think that a huge proportion of voters have been put off the current government by its handling of the Gulf war, maybe it will be the same in the US?

I'm not sure I know *what* to make of the upcoming election.  On one hand, I am a democrat, bleeding heart liberal and would love to finally see a woman/African-American ticket take over the White House.  (But at the same time, I'm a very loyal follower of Al Gore and would be ecstatic to see him make a late entrance into the running.)  My thing is, I like to believe that Americans are past the issues of gender and race, but I know in my heart that thats not true.  I think HC is very capable (and sometimes a little too moderate), but so very divisive at the same time.  And with Obama, I'm torn between him being too green vs. the change of pace the country needs.

Other than healthcare, the war (and Homeland Security) is definitely going to be a big deciding factor in the election.  Fortunately, more and more Americans every day are turning against the war and hopefully social issues will come back to the forefront.  In my perfect world it would be all about the "Right's" attack on reporductive rights (aka Roe vs. Wade), homesexual rights, healthcare and things of that nature.  Essentially, the issues that effect Americans on a day-to-day basis.

Of course, this is all wishful thinking.  Come election time there will probably be a new crisis to scare people (Iran has nuclear weapons!, etc) and the things that desrve attention will once again fall by the wayside.

[Thats not all to say that I agree with the left *all* the time.  I've certainly acknowledged that they are typically weenies when it comes to asserting themselves.]

I think you're probably right on the money by mentioning Iran, seems that there are those spoiling for a fight and I'm not sure it is just Ahmadinejad. I hope that crisis can be averted and I'd hate to think that politically it could be attractive to antagonise rather than reconcile.

The reproductive rights issue has really got lost in the noise, I'd also like to see that and gay/transgender rights take a greater role. Amazing how much people worry about everyone else's sexuality (or think it is something that can be controlled).

Not that I get a US vote but I can't decide who to root for between Hillary and Obama... either would be a welcome change I suspect. The possibility of Bill Clinton's role is an interesting one.

A Walton?  I'm going to have to admit ignorance here, because the only Waltons I know are of the Wal-Mart variety and I'm definitely not one of them.

LOL.  I wont admit how long it took me to get that.   Undecided  I spent quite a bit of today studying/at school so my brain is pretty much mush right about now.   (Nope, the copious amounts of alcohol I've consumed this evening has nothing to do with it.  Cool  )

I'm just working on my Bachelors Degree (Business Admin with a focus in marketing).  School didnt go quite as planned the first time around -- $$/job was more appealing -- and now that I dont work and have all sorts of time on my hands, I figured I might as well get started on a degree.  Today was math and I had an exam, so there was much cramming this morning.

Good on you for taking such a positive approach to your time not working... or rather, not paid work, since it sounds like hard work on that degree. My qualifications are in marketing as well, it is a great topic and will hopefully balance out the drier stuff for you. Hope the exam went well Smiley
