Huh?

Now, I understand that this is an effort to stop marriages of convenience but clearly if you have to ask permission for something then there is ALWAYS the possibility of "no" being the answer.

If some small minded bureaucrat decides, for example, that there are too many Asians in Bermuda then they could deny an application or certainly make it difficult for a Bermudian to marry the woman/man they love.

Surely this is another steamroller over the Human Rights Act?

I'm amazed by it all.

LOL

I honestly didn't go to Politics.bm, I was told about it by someone who listened to the radio this morning and yet Christian says this:

Presumably this means that if you have to get permission that some bureaucrat at Immigration can say no.

He and I think alike obviously.  Smiley

I take it none of you have been propositioned to marry someone for $7000 before.

I've been offered millions to help out some dead kings relative ship money over for real estate purposes on a number of occasions...doesn't mean i'm going to forward over my banking details...and it also doesn't need the government to step in and make regulations regarding it as well.  This is just another way for Big Ewart Brother to keep on watching you.

You know, the US has this same problem (with sham marriages so people can move there), but to deal with it, they don't seem to see the need to require permission from the US government before a US citizen can marry a foreigner...

I haven't, no.

I am aware that it happens though.

I am also aware that this is NOT the solution.

If $7000 the going rate then we've got bigger problems than we think.

Just like our coastline with each passing day Bermudians lose a little more liberty.

Will this requirement be retro-active?  Ha Ha

What if you marry off island?

Where do you send the cheque for 10% of what you were paid for marrying a foriegner?

Guess this means new meaning to the phrase "What's in it for me?" when Ego-wart is talking to Wanda.
