I was told that $15000 is about the going rate for a sham marriage, heck you wont even get a decent car for that! This kind of thing goes on all the time, the best way to catch someone out when it comes to this would be to do a spot check of the couples living arrangements, bank accounts, something along them lines, however its something that goes on in the UK alot, having spoken with a lady registrar one time. I think its very rare to hear of anyone being prosecuted for  this. I wouldnt pay $5 to pay someone to marry me to stay here personally!

What about Bermudians who marry a foreigner in another country?

That was by far the most ridiculous news item of the day.  We all know that there are some marriages of convenience, as said on this forum, it happens in the U.S., the U.K., and I would think any other prosperous country, but how can you legislate it?  How can Immigration decide if I really love "Luigi" or "Rasta-Man", or Pablo, or Manuel, or Ngutu, or, or, or......if it is a marriage of conveniece. Huh

... and if you can't tell if Luigi etc love you back, how can the immigration dept tell?

My main experience of this is in Australia. Mike and I were free to marry but immigration ask as standard that we prove it is a genuine relationship. They do due diligence but there is no way they can catch every sham, just make it more difficult. Sure, we have to answer a few slightly invasive questions but that seems a fair compromise. Asking government permission to marry seems unworkable and strange.

That's another bone of contention with me....$7grand?  That won't even buy me a bloody matchbox Kia.  I ain't marrying Ngutu or you Rasta Mon for anything under $50grand.  At least with that kind of payoff I can get myself my very own limozeeen.  Grin

Being a "foreigner" or a SoB I couldn't believe the headlines when I saw that.  Can you imagine all the inbreeding that would happen if you made Bermudians marry bermudians?  Maybe that is what is wrong with the government leaders... to much inbreeding.

When I got married and applied for the temp green card for my husband in the states I had to supply proof that our relationship was real.  It was kind of hard to do so when he was in Bermuda for 2 years before we got married because they wanted dated photos of us being together and such.  They took so long on the fiance visa we didn't get it before we were married, so I had to cough up another 800 to get the "visa for married couples"  This was almost 15 years ago too.  I can just imagine what they do now.

Interesting observation.  Many years ago (maybe 20?) the head of medicine at St. Brendan's [for any newbies to Bermuda that's the former name for the Mid Atlantic Wellness Institute] gave an interview to the Bermuda Sun.  She actually had the guts to say that the reason Bermuda had it's own mental hospital as opposed to a simple locked ward (which is all that a comparably sized city in the US would have) was that the Bermudian gene pool was stretched incredibly thin.  What amazed me was that I never saw a single letter to the editor about it and nobody, politician or otherwise, publicly demanded her head.  Of course, she left about a year later so we can hypothesize as to whether there was a cause and effect relationship going on here.

Make you a deal.  You hire Mr. Perenchief and I hire Mr. Marshall.  After all, the latter only got there because of white priviledge.

I think the expression is that "Bermudians live in the skinny end of the gene pool"!

If the application to marry a Bermudian takes as long as the application for a spouse to obtain Bermuda status, then I expect that not many marriages will be taking place in Bermuda!

Maybe it is a ploy to thin out the gene pool even further, that way no one in the future would ever question Commandate Brown and his cabel Roll Eyes
