If you are allowed to marry a foreigner - they then get labeled as a Spouse Of a Bermudian - that always seems to go down well - "Honey do you know were your SOB letter is?". Huh....

I agree with SevenT here, I find many of the terms that have been bandied around on this thread offensive and since there is no doubt as to who you are referring to i think that some of you need to be a little more careful about your comments.

I agree

Who are we talking about?

I concur here with 7T - if it was someone you knew personally i'm sure you would not be so keen to label them in the same way.  As it's fairly obvious who you are talking about I would be very careful about what you say.

I probably have far more gay friends than straight ones, and I daresay that they'd be appalled at the humourless political-correctness that has reared its head in this thread. Please, let's not be patronizing.

Good God, people, we're talking about exactly two innoncuous comments:

"putts from the rough"; and

"Bowling from the Bourneville end".

Are we really coming over all prissy and protective over such things? If so, we're bloody doomed......

I'm sorry but I, personally, find many of those terms offensive and, as such, find that i have to question their use just as I would many other terms for other situation (don't want to name them cos then I'd be using them  Lips Sealed)

Tough. Really. As brutal as that may sound, it's ridiculously patronizing to believe that our gay brothers and sisters need to be handled with kid gloves. Hell, my best friend is as gay as they come and he'd pity anyone so sensitive. If we can't joke about each others' sex, sexuality, race, religion, political orientation and all manner of other personal characteritics, that's a very sad state of affairs.

But SevenT, didn't Piglet make that comment to you and others regarding the jokes about "Brendalana's Bits" etc. ?

That comment was made (I thought) because people were talking about someone who actually posts. I tried to find the original thread so I could look back myself but haven't been able too and I'm lacking on free time as well so whatevers.

I don't know... But if I as well as others can make jokes about Julian Hall being a cokehead and not too many people make a fuss about that... Why can't I say someone is a little light in the loafers?

Not to mention, isn't "putts from the rough" a pretty tame way of saying someone is gay anyway?? I mean if I was thinking of offensive words/phrases used to refer to homosexuals, none of the ones used so far would spring to mind... maybe that's just me though.

A person's sexual orientation is really no-one else's business - except in a situation, like this, where the system is being abused. To get married to someone of the opposite sex (when one is homosexual) in an effort to obtain a work permit is exactly the kind of abuse of our immigration regulations which are/should be governed by this new legislation.

However, once again, it is one law for one group of people and another law for those who know the right people.

Then again, on the other side of it, it's just as wrong for a straight person to do it, so the person's orientation is really moot, no?

Or would it be better if they had a marriage of convenience to someone of the same gender...

Oh, wait.

And your point is??

I merely expressed an opinion.  Remember, y'all expressed yours above and I expressed mine (or rather happened to agree with someone).

Plus, i didn't have to stoop to the level of name calling to make it.  Endex.

I agree. Far more straight people marry for convenience in Bermuda than gays, so sexuality is pretty moot. It also raises the question of whether gay people should be barred from marrying straight people in the first place. Now, that sounds like a strange thing to say at first blush, but one has to look at it in context of the civil partnership laws in the UK: two people, regardless of sexual orientation, can enter into a civil partnership, which effectively gives the parties the rights of married partners. Platonic couples have made this choice, and have chosen to become civil partners for legal purposes. Should platonic friends be denied the legal rights afforded to straight and gay couples, merely because they are not romantically involved?
