Heard a lot about this site so decided to take a look and enjoyed myself immensely so I thought what the hell, everyone ceases being a virgin sometime, thus I am taking the plunge.? I am what you call a "paper" Bermudian and have acclimated pretty well to the island and customs here.? If asked will give my perspective on my "long" life on the rock.

Hey AAW, welcome. I'll look forward to seeing your posts on here. 'Paper Bermudian' always seems like a funny phrase to me. How do you become one?

Cap'n,

I believe Spouse Of Bermudian, or S.O.B. is colloquially referred to as a Coattail or Apron-string Bermudian, depending on gender.

Thank you very much for your warm welcome.  A paper Bermudian is one who gets their Bermudian status either by being married to a Bermudian for 10 years or living on the island for several years.  I achieved this status by marrying one.  It definitely took me a few years to get used to this island, but have to say that I have come to view it as home.

Of course you will hear the title "born Bermudian", like here, or here, which they wear as a badge of (divisive) honour.  Gotta remind who is who after all...

LOL  Cheesy

I hadn't heard that term "paper Bermudian" before either.  Too funny.  Although, now that I think about it, I have heard people say in casual conversation, "Well, I am a born Bermudian!"

There are occasions when you have to say whether you are a "born" Bdian or a "statused" Bdian, if you fill a job application with Bda Gov you have to state which you are, and as I am a 'paper' Bdian because my father was English and I was born overseas, but my mother's family are Bdian back several generations, I think it is a form of discrimination.

Well I guess there is a difference between being a paper Bermudian and a Born Bermudian.  I only bring up my status when needed.  I do have to say it is nice having two passports to use accordingly when going through customs.  So now I think about it, I guess my kids are paper Americans... Grin
