Before I headed off on my travels, some of the traffic lights in town were being removed. How is that working out? Is it more chaotic, better or just the same as ever? Seemed like an odd idea to me to have more four way stops, when most still struggle even with roundabouts? And how do you figure who is entitled to go first, Bermuda style?

May also apply to Bermuda,

New interpretation of traffic light colours.

Green-------give gas
Yellow--------decoration?
Red-----------just a suggestion.

In Quebec they disconnect the brake pedal from the brakes and attach it to the horn.

I've never been at a 4-way stop that went smoothly.  When the lights were out due to power problems, people just sped through without stopping.  I had near misses at such times...it really isn't a difficult concept...unless of course you are that pedestrian insisting on crossing on the diagonal!

Bluenoser,

I have to chime in here.  It amazes me that drivers here don't know they are supposed to do the 4-way stop when the traffic lights are not working.  As you point out, most take no light as "no stop".  Others, sit blocking the lane, on "no go".

If we can learn the yellow line in the middle? of the road means no parking, and the white centre line means parking allowed, surely the drivers here can learn about the 4-way stop?

Of course, these are the same drivers who will stop traffic to show how polite they are by letting somebody out from a side street.  Even if they stop when you are the only traffic in sight behind them...

Remember..... the lights in town are a newfangled thing, so when they go out, we revert to the old ways..... (when you are talking to an older local [ie. not teen] if they tell you they will meet you at the traffic lights, they are refering to the Paget lights as they were the only lights on the island)

Old ways= any road that runs parallel to Front St has right of way.... all others must wait.... until you are waiting too long(like after more than two cars come 'cross you)..... then you force your way across, thus giving you and all behind you the right of way.

Slowhand,

was that the traffic law?

Or was that an adaptation of de facto rules from the (not so long ago) horse and buggy days?

I really enjoy learning these obscure facts you share on the sight, Slowhand.  Thanks again for your participation.

The main roads are Front, Reid, Church and Victoria.... all others are branches.... so yes.... I believe that was the law before the lights in town..... most of the roads back then were two way too......

Well that certainly explains my trouble w. 4-way stops.  Thanks Slowhand.  If only that kind of info could be imparted by TCD...

There should be some kind of guide to dealing with the TCD printed. I found it thoroughly confusing, and the people there seemed to find me annoying for wanting to know how to do everything, like I should just know.

LMAO .... Sorry Legend, but they even treat us locals like that too.... TCD has changed on a constant basis (for the better..... it actually used to be WAY WAY worse) and yet when you ask questions, you get the teeth sucking, rolling eyes and attitude.... And we let it pass because we know what it used to be like and are afraid if we say anything.... they may revert!!!

every year you go in and the whole process has changed yet again.  Last year you just took a number and sat and waited, this year you have to go to the info desk and tell them what you are there to do (don't forget the ritual of "good morning" or you could get ignored, then you get a number and go sit down.  Didn't notice any change in the speed of things though.  I got a lot of dirty looks though because I had 2 of kids with me and they became VERY bored.

Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked Kids at TCD??!! What were you thinking?!!!  Shocked Shocked

I had the same thing happen.... I was looking around for the ticket machine for about 15 minutes before I got up the nerve to ask..... then got grilled about what I was going to be doing, which mystfied me. Apparently people were taking advantage of the poor old ticket machine so they feel that they had to control that too.

Still .... I repeat...... its WAY WAY better.....
