 >:(Still waiting to hear if work permit is approved- I suspect its a combination of typical governments plus island time- can anyone tell me how long it took and what is the process once an application has been received? Is there a panel that meets to discuss applications and do they meet once a week or once a month..............

Curious how things went for others

thanks

Took about 4 months 1st time, same 2nd time... there is a board that meets most weeks, but I have been unable to figure out any great logic... see the story on the home page of Bermuda Sucks.com - it is as likely as any other method I think.

You probably want a sarcasm-free reply to this, I'll try. ?My husband's work permit took only 3 months - but it was a fast-tracked temporary permit, and we were not living in Bermuda at the time of application. ?His renewal permit took 7 months - luckily you are allowed to keep working when it is just a renewal issue...but dealing with getting landing permits was less than enjoyable.

It took me almost 4 1/2 months to get permission to seek work because immigration misplaced some of the contents of my file. ?

I have heard that the panel meets once a week on Wednesday's... I tend to picture a group of people seated around an oval table with a magic 8 ball and a large red stamp.  Sorry, I am incapable of staying sarcasm-free!

On the current government it may also apply to who is in the picture.  A few years back we had a couple requests in for new employees and the black employee was approved in 2 weeks whereas the other one about 3 months...

I just got an advise from our human resources  that my permit renewal has been approved.... well, my old permit expired, um  um, last March 15, 2005! I have to get a landing permit here when they sent me off the island for a job. And its really a hassle when I take days off from the island. As fas as my employer is concern, I bet the'ye done the necessary paper works and follow ups to the immigration... I heard the rule of thumb is, dont nag or pressure them by your follow ups... they'll just make the process a bit harder and longer.... What the -- um um!

When I waited 5 months for permission to seek, it was sent to the wrong address. Much of the permission time, I didn't even know I had permission, therefore didn't seek. Dates were not extended to make up for this error, just tough it seems.

My huband's work permit, fast tracked, took 3 months, but ,  they lost my chest x-ray, which delayed permit.  Eventually it was found.  They seemed very disorganized.

That is a department that has a personality of its own - if you get a workpermit depends on alot of things and sometime just a little thing as they dont like the company who is applying -and it takes for ever and you cant nag them or they will get pissed. best of luck with your work permit. It is like wining the lottory.

they said it would take 3 months...it took closer to 5 months...i came on my wife's permit...i had permission to seek employment.  They misplaced my 50' by 30' chest x rays told me i was going to have to get more...i said i wasn't going to pay hundreds of dollars for their mix up...i asked if they checked my wife's file since i only had permission to seek employment and all my information was in her file.  They then found my stuff the next day...they have genius's working over there i'm telling you.  I wouldn't get too worried...the immigration process takes super long but if you are up for a permit chances are you will eventually get it...barring any unforseen complications.

I recently changed my position, and have been waiting now for over 2 months and no word yet.  Some of my long time friends from Fairmont Hotel all have recieved a letter with thier renewal, that this will be their last year.  Referering to the PLP 6 year limit therefor not renewing their permits for 2006/2007.

So here is another question for you- What are the odds of a work permit being approved when immigraton asks the employer to provide more info on the local candidates? Do you think the likelihood of getting approval has just disappeared ?
This is the situation I now find myself in and am looking for some feedback. Huh

Hello Waiting,

It really all depends.? They may just want to varify to make sure all qualified Bermudians were interviewed.? Here is a helpful website which may answers most of your questions. http://www.bermuda-online.org/employwp.htm

Hey waiting,

I've been in work permit limbo myself and it is tough.  Your life is on hold and your fate is in somebody else's hands.

I won't give you odds, but I'd say it is a good sign they are asking for more information.  At least they haven't ruled you out on the first pass.

Good luck, may the power of the magic 8-ball we with you.

Thanks to all for your comments- as of today still waiting!- apparently my file is in the hands of the minister so not sure what that means but suspect a decision is coming one way or the other- hopefully its favorable and I can get on with my life. This has been the most nerve wracking time of my short little life- honestly, I am sure that an employer would much rather have a Bermudian fill a role as they would be available in 2-4 weeks from hire date, not 6 months later so find it hard to comprehend why we have to jump so many hoops- its not like we are getting citizenship status or anything!

i hear that...but i do see the flip side...with a population so small they have to ensure that the Local population gets their foot in the door first.  If the system was more efficient it wouldn't seem so bad.  In the end i had to wait the six months as well...go figure.
