Hello all,

I've spent a lot of time lurking but was motivated to post due to the senseless attack this week of a Berkeley student.  While it has been briefly written up in the paper, the Royal Gazette has not printed all of the facts of the attack or does not know about them.  I work with children and as such I have heard several accounts from several different students, all of which end up being virtually the same.

Essentially, this young boy was ambushed and beaten senselessly by somewhere between 10-20 students.  Boys AND girls joined in the attack.  The rest....well....they watched.  There were a few children who tried to stop the fight, but it wasn't until a passerby drove by and phoned the police that the children stopped.

This is how I picked my name.  I am SADDENED that such a young child has had to fight for his life.  I am SICKENED that such bullies exist and would put a child in a coma with brain swelling.  Many children won't come forward with names of the attackers because they are afraid they will be beat up.  Maybe if the adults in Bermuda could put aside their hatred of one another, the children would have positive role models and wouldn't find themselves in this situation.

Please parents, talk to your kids.  Please parents, teach them that violence is never the answer!

Amen.

K2U for posting about this. I think I saw something written about it and felt bad about the whole thing. I now realize that I'm too involved in this stupid crap regarding such a hateful election that I didn't step back and see it how you are seeing it now. Now I feel like an idiot.

Is the kid doing OK? This really is the worst kind of violence we could ever imagine coming to Bermuda. Forget about body guards for our politicians - get security sorted out in schools and with violent kids.

Oh yeah - and thanks for coming aboard. Welcome.

The kid is...well....coping.  He has to have a major surgery on Monday due to the damage done to his eye.  He was hit in his eye with brass knuckles and it fractured the bone.  Sad.

Another boy tried to defend him and he was badly beaten up too.  Apparently he is back at school though and is limping.

What is really sad is that this isn't even an isolated attack.  People have no idea just how many fights/jumpings there are at Cedarbridge and Berkeley.  I don't think even the staffs at these schools have any idea of everything that goes on there.

And sadly, many parents of these children are so busy yelling at the teachers/principals/security guards claiming that their children didn't do it that the cycles keep continuing.

My goodness. I hope he recovers without any permanent damage but using brass knuckles is as bad as using a knife in my book. That's assault with a deadly weapon and reason to be put away. Bermuda really does need to wake up to this.

What's equally sad is that this happened at Berkeley, which used to be one of the educational gems of Bermuda. Progress, eh?

I think we are in one of the "saddest" times of our lives.  The "progressive" Labour Party hasn't been doing a very good job at being "Progressive" have they?

This is why my kids will be off this island by middle school age....if not before!

Thank God I have the option!

Man.....

This really is sad.... I was in high school back in '92 and nothing like this ever went down, maybe an isolated incident once in awhile but damn. Makes me really wonder what Bermuda will be like for my boyz (2 & 4) when they get middle school age Cry

Welcome, Saddened. I had also seen one of the articles this morning (um, yesterday I guess in Bermuda) and wondered what had happened. Have you any idea why (or rather, what was the excuse) this attack took place? The child that intervened did a very brave thing and I hope will not face repercussions beyond those he already experienced. I second your plea to parents to talk with their kids about this incident. Even those at other schools will have heard of it. I hope those injured will have a speedy recovery.

Yes, two of the students have been arrested.  There is apparently a trial date being set for January and word is that many of the students are being put on it.  Several students have been suspended and there may be even more.  There are some very brave kids that are coming forward and telling adults who was involved.  As well, there is a contact number for the police and all the kids know about it.

What happened?  Well, it was stupid really.  Two boys were fooling around in class saying stupid things about the other's Mama.  Except one of the Mama's was dead.  The child didn't know that and when he was told he  immediately apologized.  The boy accepted it.  It was over.  Except, other students started to prompt a fight after the class and basically laid an ambush for this boy.  What all the kids that I have talked to have been the most upset about was the fact that other kids got involved and got the main boy (brass knuckle boy) psyched up to fight the kid.  There was no need!  There is a general feeling around the kids that if a kid could get so beat up over nothing....well....what could happen to them?  Suppose they look at the wrong person the wrong way?  There have been a lot of kids who have admitted to me their parents are looking at sending them to Saltus because they don't feel safe at school anymore.

The boy that tried to help his friend is not at all in trouble.  Kids and adults are praising him for trying to stop the fight and protect his friend.  Who knows what would have happened if he hadn't intervened?  I shudder to think.

Thank you all for letting me vent here.  This incident has shaken me to the very core.  I work with children because I want to make a difference.  I am so blown away at the magnitude of the hatred I have seen here.  I am trying to be there for all the kids that are coming to me because they need to talk it out in and it is all I can do to hold it together.  Every time I hear one more fact I want to cry for the youth of Bermuda and what is happening to this country.

How are you gonna link the PLP to this incident?  It is very sad that it happened but you can't blame the PLP or any party for senseless violence c'mon.  Me and another person was jumped by 20 or 30 people 10 years ago before the PLP came into power and I didn't blame the UBP for that.  Now what you can do is call on either party to put in initiatives to ensure that younger kids aren't thinking about fighting or hating on another for trivial reasons.  These things have been happening for a long time even while the UBP was in power.  Both parties have tried in some form to address the issue but it takes an effort from the community also to help improve our way of life.

This is the second time I have heard of this scenario, the fight that ensued was not on this grand scale, and occurred at Cedarbridge.

Speaking with the father of the young man who was beaten, he said that his son is doing much better than had been first thought. One thing he said which really shocked and saddened me was there was a young girl involved, she lured my mate's son into this trap to be beaten. Really, really sad!
