Now I thought this would be an interesting experiment on driving in Bermuda.  All you do is list your latest near miss, then we can see just how bad it is driving in Bda.  I'll start.

Yesterday 5 minutes after getting in my car and heading into town I had 2 near misses.  The first on Trimingham Round about on South shore side as I went around the round about headed for town a van kept going when it should have stopped, the next was on the other round about on the Eastbroadway side, car coming off of Harbour Rd failed to give way forcing me to slam on the brakes again to avoid a crash.  This often happens here as people seem to forget it is only up until 9:30 that you dont have to give way heading into town, after that normal rules apply.

On Monday I had a near miss as a person on a bike decided to do a 'U-turn' with out regard for on-coming traffic.  On Tuesday heading out of Hamilton on Eastbroadway after 4:30 I just missed a head on collision with someone in a car who forgot that after that time traffic heading into town goes down to 1 lane.  That brings my near misses so far this week to 4.

Anybody else want to play?

I must admit when I was driving from Paget to Southampton and then through Hamilton to BLL in the morning then reversing it in the evening I couldn't keep track on a daily basis, kinda blurred after a while.

I think you all are over-stating the bad driving in Bermuda. It really is quite civilised if you compare it on a global scale. Places I can list from personal experience that are far worse than Bermuda.
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Vietnam
  • Southern Italy
  • Paris
  • Moscow

While I don't have experience here, I imagine we could add the following:
  • India
  • parts of Central America
  • parts of South America

I think many of the "complaints" that you see on here would not be stated so passionately or seem over-stated... if we were not living in a country that claims to be so perfect...

I think that is one of the most irritating issues... Bermuda is "Paradise" and NO ONE is supposed to say any thing contrary to that...

Since this is the Perfect country and we are just oh so fortunate to breathe the air here...

The driving should be perfect as well.........

Central America (Guatemala anyway) they use cast-off US schoolbuses as public transport. You inevitably end up with a small child, 3 chickens and a goat sitting on your lap. Loads of hairpin bends where, if you are silly enough to look over the edge, you will see several shells of schoolbuses that didn't make it. The people sing to the bus to encourage it up the hills, applaud it when it gets to the top (it deserves the applause) and then they pray on the way down. Even the foreigners are expected to join the singing, and the people will gladly teach you the words and turn a deaf ear to your mutilation of their language. Arriving anywhere feels like quite an achievement - it is certainly exhilerating.

As for Thailand... it mostly works pretty well, although getting on the back of a motorbike taxi, I was reassured with "Don't worry, buddhism says that if you die on this journey, it doesn't matter, you will be reincarnated." But somehow, in spite of plenty of hair raising moments, the drivers seem to get there in one piece.

Bermuda does have some amusing oddities and scary issues when it comes to the roads though. The moped riders seem to be convinced of their immortality and drink driving is so normal.

I was in two "Accidents" in Bermuda on my moped. Neither of them caused damage to my bike or injury to myself, thank God. And one while driving a friend's car.

The first time I was driving along South Shore road in Smith's and signalled to turn into my driveway and began slowing down (turning left).  The lady on her scooter behind me was...on drugs?...I don't know..she didn't notice me at all, and ran into the back of my moped as I turned in.  I was mildly pushed forward a bit (no oncoming traffic thankfully) and she split her leg open and did a number on her bike.   I was torn between rage at her and her complete lack of attention and obviously concern over her injury.  It turns out she had niether a liscence nor insurance and didn't want to phone the police or medical service, so I toweled up her cut on her leg and she rode off with a wobbly front tire.  Moron!

The second time was coming into town from Middle Road, at a light in the morning, and it turned red so I decided to stop rather than go through.  How silly of me to forget that in morning rush hour you're supposed to run these lights, and the person behind me decided I was going to run the light, and of course also ran into the back of my bike with his car.

The car accident was due to the fact that an enormously oversized construction vehicle was taking a small windy road clearly not designed for such a large vehicle (the main road was closed due to an accident of some sort, so the police in their infinite wisdom decided to direct traffic up a street as a detour, not counting that perhaps a huge wide truck carrying an enormous load maybe isn't supposed to navigate a smaller than one lane wide road?)  Anyway, it was either steer such that I would skim a rock wall or have a head on collision with an insanely large Mack Truck.  I chose to get a scrape on the side.

I was furious in all instances, and blame idiocy of Bermudian drivers for all of the above!

Maybe you should reverse the idea and anyone who makes it to work in the morning without witnessing more than 3 cases of "unroadworthy" driving wins a prize.....

You could put a squillion bucks up there and it would never be won !

On Monday afternoon I was driving along heading toward Hamilton, just past Whites a bike with 2 young men on it appeared, they were tailgating me and continued  there playing with on-coming traffic, pulling out and then dodging back behind me until we got just past Spice Valley school, they then overtook me and came, almost, to a stop in front of me and then proceeded to crawl along the road, looking back at me and laughing, this continued to Warwick Pond, when they overtook a large lorry with just enough room between themselves and oncoming traffic to survive.   Then today a little white car overtook several cars at once and pulled into the line of traffic just in time to avoid a head-on collision.  I didn't go anywhere Tuesday Undecided  I have already told my oldest boys they will not ever be driving bikes.

Hey Fedup
I have had similar experiances you had with ignorant motorist.  One day a guy on a motorcycle was riding really close to me when I was in my car.  Well I was travelling on North Shore Road near Winton Hill in Hamilton Parish heading west.  Anyway this A hole decided to overtake me on the corner and I was already going 55K.  Well I stuck to the line maintain my speed and a bus was on the coming in the opposite direction.....well needless to say the $hit was scared right out of him....he stayed behind me until I was on the straight away on Shelly Bay and he turned off.  Thing is..if he would have hit....it would have been his fault.  I dont give way to people behind me...I keep my head straight so I dont hit other people. They have to make a decision on the road that is safe to pass or not.  If they dont they suffer the hurt.  Remember the car doesnt have feelings his a$$ does.  I am a very defensive driver.  When I see ignorance...i dont buck down....I continue my journey and let the chips fall.  When I use to be a Traffic cop (long time ago now) and I dealt with accidents...I sent people to court (If they are at fault and it is careless).  The offending party always ask me for a break...I tell them..."tell it to the judge... if you were careful on the road we wouldnt have this conversation".

I have experienced people tailgating me on my bike so often, and also constantly witness people tailgating cars on their bikes. Surely there are a lot of Darwin Award contenders on Bermuda's roads.

Hmm.  This might not be the tangent to take after the Darwin Award post, but it occurs to me that posting the road traffic fatalities might help to raise awareness of the danger.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't we over the number for last year, just as the "festive season" is getting started?

Of course, that would probably be shot down as being too real for those on vacation.  Gosh, they might not rent bikes if they knew how likely it was for them to die on their holiday.

I think 5 minutes on the road would be enough to give many of our visitors an indication of just how dangerous it is to drive in paradise.
