In Melbourne, the newspapers publish road toll stats for the state daily, and every ambo station posts the stats as well. I do believe this impacts how people drive. Then again, the culture is different there, but worth a try if it reduces the number even by 1. Good call and extra karma Mike.

it's truly mind boggling...having a small area (41 sq. km) and a speed limit (35km) to have the driving issues here just doesn't make sense.  I have no idea on how to make it better, cuz it shouldn't be a problem given the circumstances.

I believe it is not usual to enforce the speed limit. Most people count anything under 50 kp/h as safe to avoid tickets.

The laws here as they stand now are NOT enforced... example: child restraint seats... I see cars everywhere here with children climbing back and forth between the front and back seats... or the seat belt law... people practically hang out the windows of a car having a conversation while holding up traffic going both ways........

My point... what good are "new" laws or the ones "on the books" when none seem to be important enough to enforce...

The only enforcing I see is downtown Hamilton Parking tickets,,, where the car is unattended, parked and the owner is causing no damage...let?s ticket those  vehicle owners and allow??.. Passing with an oncoming car approaching... driving 60 MPH... trying to beat a pedestrian across the "cross walks" in a vehicle while they are attempting to walk across the street....etc?

wow...is that true?  there is no enforcing of the street laws?...i mean i see the cops out, and sometimes i see them pull someone over but if they aren't enforcing the way they should i guess that would have a bearing on the driving attitudes here.

The only enforcing I witness personally are the ladies that walk through Hamilton placing tickets on parked cars....

I am sure that there are those that receive tickets for speeding... I have just never witnessed that in the 4 years or so I have been here...

I have seen the cops sitting at Barnes Corner I guess looking for speeders... I have yet to see them "pull" a vehicle....

I travel from Somerset to Hamilton daily and have yet to witness a cop with a car pulled over for anything other than an accident........

unfortunately i myself have been pulled over for speeding (my rant is in a previous post).  I DO see them pull people over occasionally, but i have no idea if it's enough...i guess judging by the amount of accidents that occur it ISN'T enough.

Hate that you received a ticket CC... I am really horrified at the driving habits in this country... I guess it appears worse to me than home because I see little margin for error here... You're going into a rock wall, a house, oncoming traffic, or the ocean with a mistake... and I do feel  enforcement from the police would reduce this problem....

I truely hope they intend to be in Bermudians faces day after day. Having been almost hit full on by an 18 wheeler on Pitts Bay road, I know that Bermuda is all bout being in the wrong place at the wrong time most of the time when it pertains to road traffic.

Today going into work some jerk off decided to pass a whole bunch of cars and went far into the right lane, missing a guy cycling by about 6 inches.  You could see the bike rider's hair move in the wind of the bike.  Really pissed me off.

Now I have kept my comments to myself for awhile regarding cops but I have to say something now.  There is a serious shortage of cops on this island and they keep leaving the force in droves and are not replaced fast enough.  They do try to enforce the law but when they are severely shorthanded, they do what they can.  Yes there is also lazy and bad cops but you cannot paint that picture about all of them.  When they have dangerous work environment, less pay then a lot of government positions, condemned buildings to work in, treated like crap by superiors, current government officials and the public why would they want to stay in that position?  If the opportunity arose to get a cushy position in an IB, with a major increase in pay without putting their life on the line I would leave immediately to!

I personally tip my hat off to those who do try to enforce the law working with the resources (or lack there of) they have.  More power to them.

AAW,

you tell 'em.  I'm with you here.  I'm also glad you could vent here and let us know at the same time.

You have really summarized the challenges Bermuda faces when trying to get and keep good people to be cops.  It is a hard enough problem before you add whatever corruption may exit.

Am I save to assume you were echoing the spirit of your post when you said "More power to them", and not actually suggesting the cops have more power?

My exit comment was to mean, more power in spirit to have the strength to keep doing their job!  I do have to agree that there are some areas where they should have increased legal power to serve and protect this community, but until there are changes in the laws that cannot be done.

the question is...are they going to change the laws to accomodate for the changing times?
