Always eager to spread baseless rumours, the scuttlebutt heard around the ferry docks this morning is that our boy is claiming that his intoxication was based on an innocent overindulgence of.....wait for it.....Red Bull.  Good luck with that defence.

I don't think they amended the water section when they lowered the road section from 100 to 80? It seems to be an oversight to me.

Reality: all the measurements are different - pretty much everywhere (don't ask me why?) - I doubt (not 100% sure) Bda’s is double Australia's it is probably recorded differently etc. For example the US measure .4 to .9 etc?

Bda's is the same as the UK.

Priceless - given that Red Bull doesn't contain any alcohol, how does he plan on explaining his blood alcohol levels?

That excuse deserves to be as legendary as the one about the dog eating homework. And about as believeable.  Grin

'm curious if anyone has any knowledge of the situation in other countries. Surely those driving/piloting public transport should be treated like airline pilots and have a zero reading?

Hmmmn... I'm not sure about the actual limits these days but I do remember that, long ago, the UK used to have a legal exception to the blood alcohol limit for brewery drivers. Evidently, when the breweries used to deliver beer kegs directly to the pubs the "drey-men" or truck drivers tended to have a higher-then-normal blood/alcohol level just because of the inhaled fumes and skin-absorbtion they "suffered" in the course of their work...

Like I say, it was a long time ago and probably an English urban myth...

Ferry pilot admits he was impaired

By Robyn Skinner

The pilot of a fast ferry that crashed into a dock pleaded guilty to being more than twice over the legal alcohol limit at the time.

Dwayne Pearman, 37, who was piloting the J.L. Cecil Smith picked up 60 passengers from the Hamilton Ferry dock on Friday, December 21 at 5.30 p.m.

Magistrates' Court heard yesterday how he was approaching the Rockaway Ferry terminal at 5.55 p.m. and instead of aiming for the end of the dock arm he went straight for the arm.

The court was told that the assistant pilot, who was in the cockpit at the time, asked Pearman: "Do you see it?" To which Pearman replied: "I've got it."

But even as Pearman threw the 100 tonne boat in reverse the momentum was so strong he ran into the ferry dock. After two attempts he managed to dock the ferry.

Most of the passengers were sitting at the time and none were injured. The crash did result in minor damage to the bow railing of the boat and ferry dock.

When leaving the Rockaway stop, however, further complications ensued.

Pearman pulled the J.L. Cecil Smith away from the dock without raising the gang plank.

The assistant pilot, who was standing next to Pearman at the time, took over for him and piloted the boat safely back to Hamilton.

Two Police officers were waiting at the dock and found Pearman spraying himself with air freshener as the ferry arrived back at the Hamilton dock.

He was also very unsteady on his feet and when he was taken to the Hamilton Police Station he measured between 262 and 264 millilitres of alcohol in 100 milligrams of blood.

Under Bermuda's law, the blood alcohol limit for ferry pilots is higher than for car drivers. The limit for drivers is 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood compared to 100 milligrams for pilots.

When Police searched Pearman's black bag they found a bottle of fortified wine and when they searched the ferry they found six empty bottles of fortified wine in a bin.

One of the empty bottles was found outside the bathroom where Pearman had been freshening up.

When questioned, Pearman told Police he does not drink, however, his assistant pilot confirmed he had seen him drinking that day.

Yesterday in court, his lawyer Eugene Johnston said though he has pleaded guilty, Pearman would like a chance to present information that might mitigate the circumstances.

Mr. Johnston said: "He does not drink alcohol and this is a mistake."

This is the second crash involving one of the fast ferries in the last few months of 2007.

On September 15, last year, at 12.40 p.m. as the ferry Serenity attempted to dock, with around 47 passengers aboard the boat slammed up against the dock, sending passengers flying.

Drunk driving was never suspected and a spokesman for Marine and Port Services said that an investigation was underway, however, the results have never been released.

Yesterday questions placed to Premier Dr. Ewart Brown, the Transport Minister, through both his press secretary Glenn Jones and through the Department of Communications, about Pearman's job remained unanswered last night at the time of press.

Dr. Brown was asked:

* Is there anything in place to stop this happening again?

* Will the ferry driver keep his job?

* Can the Premier and Minister of Transport give the travelling public any reassurances that this is a one-off?

Pearman, who remains an employee of Marine and Port Services, as far as this paper has been made aware, will be in court later this month for sentencing.

Yesterday the $2,000 bail he was given after the first trial date on December 27 was extended and he will reappear in court at 9.30 on January 15.

You'd have to drink a lot of grog to get that blood alcohol reading. I'm intrigued to hear how it could be claimed that the pilot doesn't drink.

As much as I like clinical accuracy in quoting could I please ask you, personally, not to quote the whole article - even if it is printer-friendly - because 1) I don't want to print it 2) I read it already 3) It just wastes bandwidth. I think the correct way to do what you intended to do is by giving a link instead... Oh blimey... you did that at the top of your post to begin with... Well that's obviously a good reason that Seven T is not going to become a moderator of this forum anytime in the near future!!!

So the ferry driver got fined $2,000 ( http://www.theroyalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7d8183330030001&sectionId=60 )

For putting peoples lives at risk this guy should have been dealt with more severely.

I hope that his employer will consider banning him from piloting any future boats, or better still, he should be fired from his job

Interesting aftermath....  yesterday the Rockaway Ferry (the 5:20 pm arrival, at least) from Hamilton headed directly into the little cove just north of the Rockaway Docks... actually disappeared from sight!... then came back around the corner hugging the shoreline and finally T-boned the dock.  Usually they head to a point slightly north of the terminal, then curve south over to the dock in plain view.  This ferry actually disappeared into the cove before coming around and docking up.  Very strange.     Huh Shocked

Is this the type of support the Police will get during the new Zero Tolerance - Safer Streets - project?

From The Gazette Article: "But Pearman's lawyer, Eugene Johnston, argued his client was a "good Christian man" who did not know the 16.5 percent proof fortified wine he was drinking was alcoholic."

What does this mean? Is it relevant? All Christians are good? Non-Christians are not good? Either way it's offensive to those of us who are not Christians. He did not know fortified wine was alcoholic? This means he's an idiot for sure.

Later it says" he might lose his job". Good. I hope he does. He endangered all of the passengers and crew. Why can't M&P confirm he's currently suspended?

Sometimes this bloody country drives me crazy! arrrggggghhhhh......

and alienate the church vote?

seriously.... maybe it's time for the public to start speaking with their feet.

then again a boycott on their services will probably = an excuse for not being able to deliver free public trans. nice.
