We have said in many stories that questions have not been answered or people have not called back and that will continue. Whether we carry it as a regular slot remains to be seen.

Do you think we should?

Jeremy

Yes.

Lets see how long that list gets.

PS, I've colluded with every other newspaper known to man on this to make sure the view is as manipulated as possible and that key facts are buried in such a way no-one will ever be able to see. In fact the whole thing is a litany of dishonesty and bias and riddled with preconceptions..........

Blimey, I'm beginning to like you already... exactly the same stuff I used to do when I was a freelance computer-journo in the old days... keep up the good work young man!

Good to se the standards haven't risen since the 80's   (note to sub-ed, insert a slightly-sarcastic smiley here before this piece goes to press please)

Just to mention again, I was writing in the 90's and new voices have been added to the mix regarding opinion since then. At the time, David White allowed only American columns and his own.

It was some of the ideological rules that particularly Mr. White brought to the newspaper that I think contributed to holding back Public discussion, thus "What role the Press?"

Asking questions of Government is profoundly frustrating. General Orders rules the Civil Service and appears open to interpretation. Questions can go up the chain of command in the Service, to the Minister, Cabinet and back down to the asker. Which inevitably leads to more questions.

A government that gleefully refuses to even entertain questions is a special touch. My condolences.

Regarding Freedom of Information (2011?), given that the key plank of the PLP 98 Election Platform was a promise to govern in the sunshine of public scrutiny, there is no reason, in a democracy, that more answers can't be forthcoming even without an actual law in place. Maybe a poll could be conducted to find out if the People believe they are entitled to greater access to the business of government that they finance. Open government was apparently important to voters in 1998. Is that true today?

Several years ago, the Press engaged the People in a Public Forum. Maybe that could happen again. And perhaps you could arrange for a respected speaker to deliver a civics lesson. Maybe Chris Rock. Hah!

Jeremy, so many hands have brought Bermuda to this place, and not all helpful. Today, with all the forms of communication available to the market place, maybe positive social change will occur at a slow creep, under our noses, with no particular author. A litmus test might be, whether the PLP could ever run an election, like this one, ever again.

Given my position, I'm not really at liberty to comment much on what you've said for political/historic reasons. However, I note what you've said about public forums, forms of communication etc.

I think blogs like this have a crucial role to play - a form of citizen or network journalism - and I think the mainstream media needs to connect with them more and more.

All I can say is watch this space...........

Or sir, it could be used as an avenue by the media for their own purposes other than printed journalism as the free speech here is not subjected to the stringent rules of libel et al as most daily's are. Just me tinkin. I love conspiracy's............. Shocked

Gotta run.......opening my new Paper tomorrow....using recycled toilet paper....."The Rummy Daily Poop Scoop".

I appreciate your position. Things have evolved with the Press since my experiences in the nineties, but the perceived legacy of being the organ of white supremacists, still tempers the view of some and is exploited by others.

Does the Royal Gazette ever try to attract and cultivate more diverse opinion from the Black Community? Are there those who write Letters to the Editor who you might consider for a regular column?

Thanks for being here,

Eddie

Yes, preceptions have their problems - and it is further complicated because people assume that by doing our job we are biased.

But, a free press that is able to ask questions for and on behalf of the public is an essential part of the democratic process.

It is a fact that the majority of questions posed by the Press - anywhere in the world - will be directed at the incumbent Government because they make the decisions that most affect people.

Bias should not be confused with the democratic right of the Press (and public) to ask questions or hold people to account and demand the right to a transparent and accountable system.

It seems that particular right and perception often get fused into one.

As for the other point we invite opinion from all walks all sections of the community and we would always welcome more. Any suggestions?

As for Rummy I want whatever he is drinking.......

Bull Script, Honey Rummy Boo. Yes, and I see you still bear the hobnail imprint on your back, where I  stomped you on my journey towards a rightly deserved Pulitzer. I am sorry you had to suffer for my art.

Love,

Right there in black and white for all the world to read. "hobnail"? Load of crap. My back bears the scars of years of torment under the UBP and zealots like you that abused us yet sorjourned to the beaches and drank your martini's and overdosed on the drugs that were prescribed for me and others. Thats why YOU are free yet we still languish in these hollow enclaves looking for an outreaching hand of Governance and stability.

"Hobnail"?....more like 'hangnail'. Your reputation preceeds you.

Gotta run...............hello? Hello? Whooze det?.....click....click......gotacha ...."Slow Current from Bay of Fundy".........
