A policeman in Bermuda was run over during a stop & search. Fortunately he only suffered minor injuries but it is a reminder of the many dangers that are faced in everyday duty situations. As their duties get more dangerous they still keep putting in the time in poor conditions... and as far as I recall I don't think their contracts have been sorted out from quite some time ago. Lets hope part of the new year's resolutions by government includes recognition in the form of the best support they can give.

The person responsible for running over the police officer has recieved a $500 fine. So whats the moral of this story, if you get stopped for drink driving, run over the police officer, wait for the police to catch up with you (if they do) and go to court and recieve your fine. Well its better than stopping for the police and getting a thousand dollar fine and 12 month disqualification if you are drink driving, Oh and if you are committing other crime e.g driving around with drugs or firearms in your car, yeah just run the police officer down and risk a $500 fine. You know this could only happen in Bermuda, they would of been shot dead by countries with armed police and at least given a custodial sentence in normal countries. I can only conclude yet again that the magistrate is on drugs or the defendant is his uncle.

Any person who threatens a police officers safety should be imprisoned for a good, long time. To be found , or plead, guilty and then get a $500 fine is an insult to every police officer on the island.

The Magistrate needs a good lickin...... First of all, I think the Police figured he get a harsher sentence charging him with assault. That did'nt happen as Mr. Timbucktoo often does. It could be likely that was his first offence (the RG report does not state anything else. The maximum under Summary jurisdiction is $1000 and a year in prison etc. Then again, thats the way Timbucktoo does things. In my view, not a well thought out prima face case by the department of 'book em dann'os' but thats 2008, ann dunt bee layte...............or you'll bee shown dee gate...ann eye dunt meen 'west' either......................... Talk about danger in the field, Bermuda's cops are the Rodney Dangerfield's of police officers in some of these moron's minds. The magistrate should have tossed the bugger in jail for a minimum 3 months no questions asked. Just like the tourists who beat up the other tourist. But this is what you get with an Attorney General who's too busy spending time in London on the Premier's personal matters instead of working with the legal system on island.

I'm appalled. Assaulting police is only worth $500, nothing to most in Bermuda. They should be able to expect a far higher degree of protection when daily putting themselves in danger for the rest of us. First offence or not, the dude ran over a police officer.

You know what? I'm gonna let it loose. I haven't for a while but here's a little touch of the ole Blackrum. The Officers they have now are useless and inexperienced and/or getting tooo old to give a damn. Most of the guys Sergeant and above are out of date. The ones that should have been promoted have not and the ones that were were done years ago.

You show show me a Sergeant walking around Hamilton, Somerset Villiage, St. George and I'll give you a hundred bucks. They have so much on their plate that they can even retain, obtain, and remain bodies.

We don't need the Col. Burch approach. We need the Jacksons and the Adams and that other guy (ass/Com) to do the work of their predicessors. The Deputy's job is what I just spoke about, thats their job the everyday running and funtion of the service. Too much deadwood up there and maybe a few 'cedar beams' too.

Rant over. It's all about supervision and not just showing up....................

I need a rum..........................

Rummy i dont agree with everything you say but if you think officers are too inexperienced or too old its because no one wants to do the job here so if you are going to pay peanuts you are going to get monkeys then for the public to moan about the quality of the police well what do they expect. Do you know that they have been advertising in Jamaica for unexperienced civilians to come to Bermuda and train here to be police officers, they are only going to be coming here to take the cash and run so things are only going to get worse they are not going to give a damn about protecting the public and fighting crime but who would want to, if the courts cannot even protect the police, not to mention the dump of a police station or no pay rise for three years. I hope the first thing they teach the Jamaicans is to say good morning!

By comparison to the $500 fine, a tourist was fined $1600 for having weed of a Bermuda street value of $75. Yeah, that makes perfect sense.

Running over a cop: $500
1.63 grams of weed: $1600
Friendly magistrates: spineless.

This makes me laugh:

http://www.royalgazette.com/siftology.royalgazette/Article/article.jsp?articleId=7d8123330030009&sectionId=60

So...what're the police going to do if you pretend to have a gun?
Ask the RG to print a request to the public to please not do that anymore!

GAWD get these police some protection equipment!!!

Being annoying and irrational is a crime? Hmm, quick, send the cops to the parliament building.

Make for a good Not The UM UM Show routine....

"Scuse me sir is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?"
"Yes Officer it's a gun, now piss off."
"Oh, I was hoping you were just happy to see me."
"Yes OK, I'm happy to see you, now will you piss off?"
"Why would you want me to leave if you're happy to see me?"
"Well OK, let's put it this way, I'd be happier to see the back of your head. Now really, piss off."
"Oh that's not very nice. In fact that's rather annoying... I'm afraid I'm going to have to arrest you."
"For what?"
"Being annoying.... and irrational."
"Irrational?"
"Yes irrational. You say you're happy to see me but you want me to leave. That's irrational."
"OK fine. Arrest me. But help me bury this bloke before he stinks up the place."
"OK then. Now that's being rational. Don't want anything smelly going on in Bermuda now do we...."

I think the reason the Police are asking for 'cooperation' from the public is because you will find that many Officers are in fact 'armed' some covertly and some overtly.

Obviously this brings another dimension to the usual idiots who think it is funny to pretend to have a gun or not comply with directions from an armed Officer.

The bottom line is comply with the directions you are given and raise your concerns at a later and safer time!
