I read in the paper that some lady was caught overtaking another car on Stonecrusher corner.  The small article said she forced another car off the road and had an unsecured child in her car.  She pleaded guilty to dangerous driving but claimed that the police account was wrong.

In any case...she was given a $400 fine.

For dangerous driving....

With a child in her car....

Unrestrained....

I was given a $300 fine in the early 1980s for speeding at 57kph on my way home from school.

Is there any wonder why people now drive the way they do on these roads.

$400 is pathetically inadequate. If the government and governor could work together on sentencing guidelines, it would be a serious achievement. People (not just in Bermuda) seem to think they are invincible in their cars.

                                  Roll Eyes

When I was a reporter back then - I was in court when a very prominent Front Street businessman was sentenced to six months in prison for driving while under the influence of alcohol. A prison sentence was mandatory then. Today drunk drivers get a slap on thw wrist......This really gets me because in the mid 1990's a nephew of mine who was Permanent Secretary for Immigration & Labour, was just seconds away from his home on Harbour Road, Warwick when a drunken truck driver came around the corner just there by Inverurie Hotel on the WRONG side of the road and my nephew was killed instantly......He had a wife and three sons under seven years old! .....I don't know what these damn magistrates are thinking these days by letting drunk drivers get off with just fines!

Do tell! Who was it? (C'mon, it's public record, you can tell us!) Did he really serve the 6 months?

Very sorry to hear that. How did they make out in the long run?

Since we don't know the full circumstances of the actual proceedings in court I think it best to avoid making judgements.

This chap/women was 'off duty'. I doubt he pulled her over and if he/she did, they had no legal authority. (ya gunna stop for someone tootin their horn, not me). Possibly they contacted another officer who told them they would be reported or it just went through the normal 'Ill get you bitch' summons preceedure.

I am sure the Magistrate looked at the time of the offence, the proceedure et al and all circumstances and why they handed down that Judgement.

Not like she was doing 100kph and forced everyone into the fence and into Ferry Reach. Yes she was wrong but mitigating circumstances do prevail at times.

                                        Huh

Yes he served the six months. I'm not going to name any names, but the black rum there is very good....Also, he was in the same social circle as was the senior magistrate at the time!...but, like I said...it was mandatory.

Yes indeed, very sorry to hear that Twiggie. Judging by your posts they obviously had a good role model to help out.

Sorry Noel...I meant to answer your first question separately. Yes, he served six months. I'm not going to names, but the black rum there is very good. (In fact it's known world wide!). Also, he was in the same social circle as the Senior Magistrate at the time. But like I said, it was mandatory1.
