Hello everyone:

Allow me to officially introduce myself.? I am Jamaica Girl, and I have been posting quite alot without a proper introduction...sorry!

I have gone back and forth in my mind as to whether or not this would be a wise decision for me, as so many people out there in Bermuda would identify me right away if I gave up certain details about me and my life in Bermuda...anyway here goes...

I lived on the island for just about seventeen years (17!) and married a Bermudian after living there for about seven years...I almost had my Bermudian papers, but had to leave three months before I could apply for Bermudian status, as I became very ill (here we go now, this is the part that people will know who it is - eek!) - needless to say, I am not Bermudian, and am living permanently back in JA.? I have left alot of great friends there, but went through SO many frustrations that I could never live there again.? The illness thing was the last straw, but I am happy to report that after three years I am back to the old me, and try not to look back at those dark days of the last six months I was there and very sick.

Your posts are very wise, and they also keep me sane - it is great to see that finally, expats and Bermudians alike can have a place to speak up, vent frustrations and at the same time, get to know each other.

JG, I'm glad to hear that after such an ordeal you've managed to get back to where you want to be.  I've enjoyed your posts, especially the descriptions of your beautiful country.  keep up those good spirits.

Hi JG...glad you are part of the forum.  I never had considered Jamaica as a place I would want to visit, but you paint a really nice picture!  Keep it up and I'll have to book a ticket!  You mentioned in another post about some health issues. How would you say health care in Jamaica compares to Bda?  Luckily I have had great health care expereinces here (one of the biggest reasons I do not want to leave is our terrific pediatrician who actually gives out his home # and answers concerns via email)!  We've had great experiences with ambulance care and emergency room (of course, in Canada you rot in an emergency room)!

Bluenoser:

I am happy to hear that I have been giving some positive vibes about JA, please come and visit us soon, you will not regret it!

As for the health care in Bermuda vs. Jamaica, well, I always had good health care in Bermuda.....right up to the time I woke up one day in Oct. 2001 dizzy as hell, and not one Dr. there seemed to be able to pin point what could be doing this to me.? It was a nightmare, beyond nightmares.? I had to stop working, and eventually return to Jamaica where I continued to see Doctors and Specialists.....it was a Doctor here in Jamaica who insisted on me getting more tests, and he diagnosed me with some type of poisoning in the system.? He said it would take one year for me to get better, and it was one year to the day.? Yes, I used the emergency room many times in the beginning of this nightmare, and all they would do, was to give me anti-dizzy medication that never helped.? My regular Doctor in Bermuda insisted it was "all in my head" so that is the straw that broke the camel's back, per say....and that is what led me back here.?

Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic Doctor's in Bermuda...and overall the hospital care was very good.? When you mention about the Pediatrician giving out a home #, that is how it is here in Jamaica...we are still in the old world days of the Doctor visiting you at home if you wish.? The hospital care here is very good, and we have in Kingston alone, ten hospitals at your fingertips that are not public, they are private.? I also have many friends from the US who have had their babies here in Jamaica, and had great experiences at the hospitals and with the Dr.'s and Nurses' care during and after.
