Burch was just on Hott with Thaao talking about the axing of RG subscriptions AND advertising.  So I stand corrected, they are aiming for a savings of $840,000 annually from the RG.  (not $42,000 which is just subscriptions).

The thing is, this actually won't (or shouldn't) save that total amount of money. A lot of that money comes from public notices that are legally mandated. So even if they pull them from the RG, they are still going to have to run them somewhere. And that won't be free.

I wonder who's going to get the advertising? Or will they just change the law to do away with the public notification in the media?

Burch is also looking for a way divert employers having to pay to advertise for work permits in the RG for 3 days.  That's presently part of Immigration protocol that WILL change under Burch, he said.

No doubt they can change the rules to not require the RG. However, I'd be surprised if they can have rules requiring public advertising and forbid use of the RG.

Indeed, but.... remember the BHC documents court case - and how when the smoke cleared, there was nothing else in the file. I wonder if this attack on the RG isn't meant to divert attention from something else?

After thinking about this some more, I came to the same conclusion.  You are indeed right, the $800,000 is not a "savings" but just a redirection of spending.  The Govt has not said it is planning to stop the advertising, but just direct the business from the RG to electronic and broadcast media (like Hott) ie. "friendly" media.  We all know Thaao is drinking the Koolaid and was rewarded for his PLP endorsing efforts pre-election by being granted a position in the Senate.

So is it ok to direct Govt business to broadcast media owned and operated by a Govt MP and Senator?  Sounds like a conflict of interest to me.

Thaao was touting this morning about the significant savings of $800,000 and clarifying that it was not JUST $42,000 being saved.  But he of course, never mentioned that Govt would not be actually saving the money, just rediverting it partially to his employer's pocket.

Amazing...

Breezeblog verifies the rumour that Dr. Brown’s mysterious new media concern has been trying to recruit Royal Gazette reporters to join his cause. Good lord, including those treacherous and pesky expats.

This would seem to underline the fact that Government’s recent attacks on the Royal Gazette are personal as opposed to “responsible fiscal management.” The whiff of BCC still lingers.

Bermuda has a long tradition of competing dailies, including several black owned papers, that were very important to Bermuda’s development. Even the Royal Gazette represents the merged operations of several of those earlier papers. Dr. Brown has also tried his hand with the Bermuda Times.

What is key is that all of these papers were independent and free to analyse the performance of the Government of the day. I don’t think that’s what Doc has in mind.
