Bermudian overseas, living in Dublin. I haven't lived and worked in Bermuda since 1999; it was the U.S. and then Spain, and Ireland since 2002. I married and settled down here. I started working for The Mid-Ocean News back in 1993 then went on to work sporadically for the Gazette as well. It depends. I just joined up here out of interest. Any Dublin Bermudians, feel free to give me a shout. OK ...

Oh, you kidders. Ireland's not bad. Dublin wouldn't win any beauty contests. But I've lived in a few places and this one felt right. Irish people don't always seem that different from Bermudians. Eccentric islanders ...
Bermuda's been an entertaining place to watch from a comfortable distance of 3,000 miles. A lot of acrimony over that election. I wondered what was really going on there. Still, I've got to say, having just spent 10 days back home, the island's doing well. Jesus, though, the rent! I thought Dublin was bad. That's the worst thing about the place that I can see. I would have been totally screwed.
I found this place and figured I'd tune in a little deeper. I haven't really been embedded in Bermuda since 1999. I'm intrigued.

Actually Bell...I have a few friends that live in Ireland Island. The expences are minimum. Free lodging, food, no bills, no nada.....great neighbours, free dental et al.........Such a 'high' class place...visitors and friends are welcome but time wise, the tranquility and freedom from the rush of everyday life is just out of this world........ Welcome.......

The biggest spin off from the rents, increase in basic need items and increases in school fees - is a lot of Bdians are leaving for other places - which is sad as many of them were positive influences in Bermuda and in the community - as you indicated it is hard to see some of this when on vacation!

Yeah. Bermuda does have something of an export in talented Bermudians. It's a bummer. But I had that whole claustrophobia thing going. Man, it used to drive me crazy ... look in any direction and you see the ocean somewhere. A very pretty ocean, to be sure, but Jeeshums H! I just couldn't take it. I had the opportunity and I took it. I'd have drunk myself even nuttier than I already am if I'd stayed in Bermuda. Besides, being a reporter, it's not like I'm much qualified for other work in the place. That whole international business thing is a pretty exclusive party.
Now that I'm older I'm not so antsy. That is one hell of a small place, though.
I'm lucky, though. I got conscripted by the Bermuda Regiment when I was 18. I wasn't crazy about the idea of doing that thing but I was always in and out of the island and serving never became a serious issue, except for that time when they cut off all my hair. I was just back in Bermuda when those Bermudians Against the Draft guys lost their case. That's pretty unfair. I figure if somebody really doesn't want to do it, what's the percentage in forcing them? That would've seriously wiped the grin off my face, if I'd had to go through all that ... signing that stuff with the Queen on it ...
Still, what the hell. I was drinking with this Greek guy. They've got a draft too. It's everywhere. It just ... it bothers me. Greece is a country and Bermuda, you know, it sort of isn't.
Damn, though, that rent! What I'd do, I'd get a place down St. George's or St. David's, shack up out of the way. There must be lower rents in the marginal parts. Somewhere. Hiding.
Still, right now in Ireland the sun's still shining brightly at a quarter to eight at night. Dublin's got that golden glow. It ain't bad. If I went under a bus tomorrow, I wouldn't go feeling like I got ripped off.

Welcome Bell.  Glad to have you posting here and sharing your view.

I'm glad you found a place to reclaim some sanity.  Not always the easiest thing to do!

Keep a sharp eye out for those buses, I'd like to hear more from you!   Smiley

Well, you crazy bunch a' fruitcakes, I've been on this site for most of my Sunday, and thanks to your constant references to black & coke, I've thoroughly addled myself here.
So let me get this straight. "Bermuda Sucks" started up as an ex-pat site, did it? Kind of a safe place for our gastarbeiter to talk about how insane Bermudians are. Then it got caught up in the whole PLP UBP imbroglio. And then some guy calling himself "Tigga" who may or may not exist. And now you're all just basking in the afterglow here. I can see it.
Well, I think I like this place. I'll have me some fun in here. I'm staying. But reading all this stuff, there's a lot of racial madness, a lot of comparison of Dr. Brown to Mugabe ... I don't, personally, think the present uh administration in Bermuda is going to wind up doing the island too much harm. This could all just be the final painful spasm in a long birth process. That Tigga feller dominated things for a while, but I get the feeling black and white Bermudians are having some good conversations in here. More than they did back when I lived in Bermuda.
We're a weird bunch, us Bermudians. One thing I liked as a reporter was interviewing old black Bermudian guys. Ross Manders was a hoot and a half to interview. I liked getting their perspective on the racial situation. John DeShield, he died just recently, would've been 100 this summer ... Jesus, back in those days it was tough being black. And I commonly found in my interviews the theme of serious organised racial discrimination still commonplace in Bermuda in the 1980s. People not getting promoted or not getting jobs, not getting loans or mortgages. Qualified black workers watching white men promoted over them to jobs that they didn't know how to do. All the shit that we have to go through nowadays on the perennial theme of skin colour is just the past continuing in the present. Sort of a slowly-decaying isotope, I guess.
I would have voted for the PLP if I'd been in Bermuda in 1998, no question about it. As it was, where I was, I was overjoyed to learn they'd won power in Bermuda. I didn't expect them to do a very good job, but I thought its symbolic value outweighed basically everything ... finally, finally, after all this agonising tedious Race Talk, we'd get somewhere. And the way I see it, both the PLP and their adversaries failed Bermuda. A large portion of the white community genuinely expected a Mugabe scenario, which was ludicrous, and the PLP did doodle-squat. They know, of course, that plenty of us are simply unable to ever stomach the idea of voting for the UBP. And they exploited it, and have done F.A. otherwise. It's a crock. I don't care what party you support, but you ought to be disgusted with the position of Bermuda at the moment. I guess, in a lot of ways, we in Bermuda have done what human beings everywhere do - take a good opportunity and screw it up royally. The PLP victory in 1998 opened an incredible new window for change, and ... I don't know. Maybe the rum has caused a blood sugar crash here. But it depresses the hell out of me. So this is a good site for me, I think ...
But, then again, it could be a lot worse. Imagine a Bermuda where handguns were not only legal but easy to buy!
Anyway, if there's a site called "Bermuda Sucks" then that's where I want to be. It's a healthy sign. Perhaps this is all indeed but a final blemish. Ah, I used to laugh at Stuart Hayward, but now I think differently ... in conclusion: yes. And you're all mad. Mad, I tell you.

"a lot of comparison of Dr. Brown to Mugabe .."

I think if you dig a little deeper you'll find people are actually only comparing Bermuda to Zimbabwe, not Brown to Mugabe, but we're not allowed to talk about that anymore.... although I'd love for someone to tell me how long before we're allowed to say I told you so.

As for Tigga - he's got more personalities than a parade of drama queens. You never know when he'll show up in any one of his masterfull disguises. Heck he could even be you. After all he's always the first one to try and ring one's bell. Wink

Hey Bell...It was tough back in hose days as you say for everyone. Race had nothing to do with it.  Yes there were a few priviliaged whites, as there were blacks.
I just came bck from my Wifes Grandmothers 100th birthday. The stories she told about the neighbou "depression" and her 8 children and nothing to eat or 5 years. They made it, they were strong and had strong neighbours.......and did not live beyond their means...they had none.

(muss be touching something again.......figure....)

It's all relative........

Although that gives us more credit for actually having a plan or purpose than is actually due, I'd say you've about summed it up.

Enjoy your stay in the nut-house.   Smiley
