Because it's part of our history and tradition, and we badly need to hold onto what scraps of our separate identity we still retain

If the monarch's home country doesnt even celebrate her birthday this way, then why should we as a dependent territory?

"Because it's part of our history and tradition".

Quote
Why not celebrate people that have had hands on experience with making Bermuda what it is? ... surely there are people whose efforts and contributions warrant honouring

You seem to be assuming that I do not favour honouring significant Bermudians. This is an incorrect assumption.

I wonder what the business community thinks of having to pay for a new holiday... and when they actually found out...

Many tourists come to Bermuda because they enjoyed the "english" pomp and circumstance - They like afternoon tea and biscuits and all that stuff.

I guess New Bermuda means that to hell with tradition, we are going to ram Independance down your throat and the fist way to cut ties with the UK is to trash the last piece of Colonialism - remove the Queens Birthday off of the calendar.

Did you also notice that the new holiday is the first day of the PGA Grand Slam? Wonderful, Lets all march around beating drums like backward ass tribes out of the jungles, shutdown the island to drink elephants (and throw beer bottle in the trees) so that the whole world watching the golf on TV can see.

What would have made better sense would be to keep the Queens Birthday parade and day off (it's summer for god sake) Have a dedicated Sunday whenever in the year for services all over the island for Heros and have an island style picnic for everyone.

These puzzies have not even considered that fact that the extra holiday amounts to millions of dollars now having to be spent on overtime for those who CANNOT simply take a day off.

The article does not say what is going to happen in 2010 and beyond.

BTW, I am not that interested in celebrating the Queen, etc, etc. I like the Queen's Birthday thing because it's a Bermuda tradition.

"I wonder what the business community thinks of having to pay for a new holiday... and when they actually found out..."

It's only an extra day this year, will be back to the normal number of national holidays next year.  I think six months is ample notice.

this did happen last year, and with much less notice when the Dame passed.  I don't think the world came screeching to a halt as a result.   My company simply gave everyone the option to work if they had something pressing and take a day in lieu to be used later.

It is pretty interesting to see that this is on the first day of the Grand Slam, though.  Random coincidence?  What does that do to the cost of the whole affair re public buses, parking attendants, etc all getting holiday pay for the day?

The D, it may only be an extra day in your eyes but do you understand exactly how much money this accounts to? This year. Nevermind Ib, who can afford it if necessary but what about other companies, small businesses who now have to pay overtime if their staff decides to work or have to figure out what to if they decide not to. Sure it's 6 months leeway but that doesn't make the circumstances any less cumbersome. I personally am gonna have myself a good day being off but that doesn't mean I can not appreciate the pressure this will put on businesses. I am less concerned about the time frame than the methods of choose first, inform everyone later.

I think the timing of it is fantastic. Tiger will be ever so pleased to not be the "only" black person being celebrated in Bermuda on that day.
