Looks like they're moving away from Queens Birthday to celebrate National Heroes Day in October.  This makes a lot more sense to me than their original plan to rename May24.  And we get an extra holiday this year.

I dont really have a problem with this. The Queen's Birthday doesnt get a holiday in the UK so why shouldnt we get rid of the holiday and have one to celebrate Bermudians who have made significant contributions to the country? Hopefully we wont celebrate a named hero every year, but rather celebrate all national heroes every year.

As for the parade, I used to hate it when I was in the Regiment. I figured that she never marched on my birthday so why should I march on hers?

Boy George is gonna be pissed.... Angry

Just another nice little dig at the Old Colonial powers. Hello everyone have you seen the New Colonials?

Hmmmm.... wonder which day they've picked for the new paper to come out and what will it be called? The Bermuda Indepedent or The Royal Bermudian?

You think? Wink

Hated it too.

But the parade will go on, just no holiday.  By the left!

Exactly.   I always questioned the wisdom of messing around with May 24, which actually means something to Bermudians (granted different things to different people) when they had this perfectly useless holiday a month later that nobody seems to give a flying fig newton about.  I always loved it when friends from the UK would visit and be completely shocked that we had a day off and a parade and they didn't...

Because it's part of our history and tradition, and we badly need to hold onto what scraps of our separate identity we still retain, before we get a US zipcode as well as an area code?

The big question is whether or not he'll let the gov make his usual grand entrance on the horse 'n buggy....

It was always funny to see how one person on parade could make the whole company mess up the feu de joye. Some clown at the end always got woken up by the first shot then the whole company fired at will!! LMAO!

'Because it's part of our history and tradition, and we badly need to hold onto what scraps of our separate identity we still retain, before we get a US zipcode as well as an area code?'

If we really want to have our own separate identity, then why not celebrate our own. If the monarch's home country doesnt even celebrate her birthday this way, then why should we as a dependent territory? Why not celebrate people that have had hands on experience with making Bermuda what it is? We can debate on who should be celebrated, but surely there are people whose efforts and contributions warrant honouring more than someone who is in a position by virtue of birthright.
