I'd say our esteemed Premier is asleep at the wheel.... but he doesn't even drive. Undecided

Well, lets put it this way. He does not drive well but he sure knows his game and handicap.

the class/culture argument doesn't work for me either, because:

a)both are inextricably tied to color-stratification. like i've said before, race is the language that class speaks. it and gender are the two quickest ways to determine who's supposed to occupy which social roles, which is why racism/sexism are the two biggest and quietest social concepts parceling people up world-wide.

b)white folk of all classes have always existed in bermuda. even the poor folk didn't integrate with black folk, y'know? if they had, we'd probably have a very different socio-political system here. frankly, one that would be more mature by definition since the racial bloc voting would no longer be something the country would be dealing with or allowing to shape the culture.

I think thou does assume faaaar too much....

I have a black female doctor - Bermudian
I have a black female dentist - Bermudian
I have used black female lawyers on several occassions - Bermudian
The owner of the gym I go to is black and Bermudian

Colour stratification?
Race is the language that class speaks?

I'd say that's a load of garbage Thaao.

Thaao,

Just because you don't mingle, socialise, fraternize or befriend individuals of the other race, does not mean that it doesn't happen.  Just because the older generation didn't experience it back then, doesn't mean it doesn't happen today.  You are always speaking in a historical context, have you even looked around these days and seen the social integration/interaction which takes place between blacks and whites of this island?  If not i suggest you go out into the real world (not Hott/PLP world) and observe the younger generation (which you are a part of) in social settings.

Of course there are still ignorant individuals on both sides of the spectrum.  But not even close to what it must have been like a few decades ago.

Have you looked around and seen the non-intergration on this island? Who goes to the Bda Day parade? Go out on a boat to Paradise Islands during the summer and see what the vast majority of the people are... Thaao is not saying integration doesn't happen just that it's a long frakking way from being ideal. If you can't see that, then you need to have a peek into place like Harrington Workman's and then go visit Dockies. Nothing is ever simply black and white (no pun intended) but that doesn't mean there are better ways to be. It's not historical when you are discriminated against, you yourself I mean. Whatever colour you are!

You're right, it isn't the same as it was decades ago but that doesn't mean everything is all honky-dory now. Otherwise why would we STILL be having this discussion...

"honky-dory"

Sigmund would have a field day with you my dear.....

It's "hunky" - a honky-dory is what you'll find up at "Paradise Islands during the summer" Wink
