Well that certainly goes against the pre-conceived notions of the drug/gang/firearm that are prevalent in Bermuda (and on here, judging from recent convos). Man, $1 million bail... all I can say is damn!

All young adults (kids) ... says something ... I would have said something different as its weed but unfortunately a weapon was present ... good luck to their parents.

PS:  Sorry to be Bermudian about this but guessing from the names they are all of Portugese-decent.

"Loaded" weapon. And drugs is drugs to me... I know not the common thought here but that's just me.

I assume they were. I think I know one of the guys though.

Adding to the heresay, I was told that some of those arrested/charged are pretty big players in the drugs chain, and others are there through association.

What I can't figure out is who has posted bail the bail money at 1 million bucks each for two of them. Sometimes the bail poster needs investigating as well, cos there sure aren't too many individuals who have that sort of money that they can just pay out.

I believe you don't actually have to pay the money in ... the accussed and in this case their surety agree to pay the money in the case of a no-show.

JJ - I had the same reaction... a million bucks each!?!?! That's some pretty hefty change...

And as alsys pointed out, this little ditty definitely does cut against some of the pre-conceived notions expressed either explicitly or implicitly by individuals as to what types of individuals are involved in the whole drugs/gangs/guns things... We like to talk about the plight of young black males in Bermuda... well... I can assure you that whilst they might be the 'usual suspects', they don't have a monopoly on drugs, gangs OR guns.

What preconceived notions?

Notions are ephemeral.  No feeling is final.

Are you surprised that they are white/portuguese?  Meditate on that.

Statistics are real.  Feelings and notions are not.  Perhaps this is a good case study and people should study the commonalities.  ie coming from poverty.

Drugs transcend all colours.  We need to free our minds that drugs/gangs/guns a black thing...  it's a poverty thing!

IMHO

Not surprised at all ... and drugs/gangs/weapons are not just for the poor ... the rich play to.

CO - anyone who thinks that  drugs, gangs or guns are  black crimes - are divorced from reality. I find the constant reference to that extremely unhelpful in terms of the so called war on drugs. I suspect the contrary. I suspect that most people in Bermuda believe that dealing (by that I mean street dealing) is a black thing and financing, importing etc. is a white thing. Whether that is true or not, we will never know for certain. I just base it on conversations and experiences I have had. But at the end of the day the whole racial thing is irrelevant albeit expected. It is a Bermuda thing (which perhaps by default makes it a race issue) and indeed a human thing.

Nonetheless, congrats to the police officers who conducted the investigation and kicked in the doors, probably knowing that guns were involved and probably while we all slept comfy in our beds.

TC - I would encourage you to go back and read the MURDER thread in which those very ideas were tossed around... some more openly than others.

Drugs/gangs and guns arent a poverty thing. They are a 'decision' thing! A 'choice' thing!

Statistics are as real as you want them to be. I remember the manager for my long suffering football team once said, and I apologize if I offend, 'Statistics are like mini-skirts, they are great to look at, but still hide the best parts.' Again, sorry to be so crude.

Grats, did I state that I was surprised? I wasn't.

And Darkside, where does it state they were rich? I don't automatically assume white or portuguese equates wealthy. Do you?

I read the murder thread, at least as much as I could stomach. The sentiment that people felt that drugs/gangs/guns = black was flawed then as it is now.

Alsys30 ... sorry didn't mean to infer they were rich only that the rich "play" with drugs/gangs/weapons too ... I case you don't know I really don't go for distinctions based on the race/colour/ancestry thing.
