"And Canadian too -"

Now that's what I'd call an insult - A. Wink

So judging from the fact that you were not the person in question I'd say you were not alone. See how smart I am? And I'm a Bermudian. Smiley

Please allow me to apologise for your treatment in Bermuda. But one question... were your bosses born and bred in Bermuda or did they pick up their bad habits elsewhere? Undecided

Hell, I just pushed my bike from Arnold's, up Woodlands Road, to 24/7.
I'm smelling pretty bad, m'self. It's not just the foreigners! Cheesy

I thought this was a place to tell your ‘Bermuda sucks’ story warts and all... so we can all have a good laugh about each other’s misery.

It is, my dear.

The mean spirited Bermudians here just want to try to shout you down and make you stop.  But... it doesn't work that way on this 'Island'.   Wink

I notice that nobody had the decency to accept your apology, although they were quick to jump on you for what is clearly hyperbole.

No wonder SmokingGun has more karma than anybody here.  He alone steps up and offers a simple word that sooths rather than inflames.  Karma to you Smokes.

Actually Mike, I accept her apology because I know what it is like to say something in the heat of the moment which comes off in a way you didn't expect.  However, it happens that after I typed my bit, I logged off for a while (went to a class) and am now just reading her post.  Karma to Smoking Gun for stepping up but geez man, give us a chance to respond  Cheesy  I spend all day with a computer, I don't like to spend all night with one as well - haha.

Thanks Mike & Wassup. Truth is I never take it too personally when someone has been done bad by someone else unless I had a direct responsibility for it then I'd be pissed. Just not at the victim. I know where they are coming from but for sure I'm no saint as can be seen by the paint splatters that I wear. I've harped on this exact subject for years. Too many guest workers get abused and the only outlet they have is a website to post their grievances on? What does that tell you.... Undecided

reading Ad Girls post made me think that perhaps you had the same employer!  spookily reminiscent of each other.

Not the same one, but the same type.

Bermuda Local Companies are the worst to work for.  Most Many of the businesses that support Exempt Companies (International Business by usual name) struggle to compete in the vastly disproportionate employment market.  Not only can IB afford to pay two or three times more for an equivalent position, they also give away tons of perks like free lunches, US and UK Public Holidays, etc.  Just like any imbalance, this creates a lot of tension - and resentment.

There is so much envy on the part of Local Business to be part of the stupid-rich set that is the top end of the Bermuda market, you can see the green in the faces.

Sure, before the masses get up in arms about generalizations, let me say that I've had the pleasure of knowing and working for some shining examples of terrific Bermudian business people in the Local Business sector - I've also had exposure to a lot more who aren't.  I shouldn't have to keep putting in my "I don't hate Bermuda" disclaimers, but those damn Onions are so fragile.   Undecided

The way I read the whole exit questionaire, and specifically Adgirls answers, is that they way the questions are worded then obviously some of the answers will require a "tongue in cheek" reply.

Without trawling through previous exit answers, I would guess that a lot of them have exaggerations in them, some may be necessary, some may not.

The only thing I took exception to was the detailed description of the employer, and his personnal habits, and the only reason I took exception to this, was that it was pretty much guaranteed that someone would be able to figure out who the employer was. If you want to be specific about someones personnal habits, then please don't identify them.

The comment relating to Bermudians in management, I took with a pinch of salt. We all have our gripes about people here, however this is Bermuda. They do things differently here, much like Canada is different from the UK etc etc.

One of the biggest problems I see with expats, is that they are not prepared to change there methods and adopt the Bermuda way. There are many things I disagree with, but I cannot change them, so I get on with life accepting that that is how things will be. If I was so unhappy with things then I would leave, but I'm not. I have found an equilibrium, where the good things about Bermuda equal the bad things. Same as anywhere else in the world and any job for that matter.

"If I was so unhappy with things then I would leave, but I'm not. I have found an equilibrium, where the good things about Bermuda equal the bad things. Same as anywhere else in the world and any job for that matter."  Well said JJ!  I get along great with virtually everyone I meet.  I try to be friendly, positive, and smile a lot.  If people want to be nasty or miserable, then **** 'em!  I do not have to 'buy into' their bullshit.  As was rightly said, you ain't gonna change nothing... 'cept yourself.  So get used to it.  I do, however, have some sympathy for Brits with accents, as they seem to catch the most shit here I believe.  But they can be 'cliquish' too.   Wink Lips Sealed Cool

I really think a good or bad work situation is what can tip that balance... I was fortunate to meet some terrific people and had a lovely Bermudian housemate but still having a horrendous boss made Bermuda life more of a struggle. My choice was to stick around and take it or leave behind the good stuff. You're right that getting along with everyone helps where that is possible - in the end we all have to decide what we can ignore or otherwise. My boss telling me to lie to clients and belittling a temp for being black was the point where I could no longer stay quiet. Things got considerably worse from then but I'd do the same again - I gotta live with myself. Having some far nicer Bermudians in my life at the time sure helped keep things in perspective.

'Cliquish?' - if that means huddling together in a corner, trying to keep their heads down, not attract too much attention and avoid being covered in flying shit... then YUP, you're damn right they're 'cliquish.'   laugh

Excellent first post, adgirl - thanks for taking the time to do the exit interview.

You notice things haven't changed much, as evidenced by the responses.  There are a few Bermudians who are decent people and have a bit of empathy, but most of them just want to criticize you for speaking up telling lies.  It isn't to make a counter point about what you say, but to make a personal attack on you.  They want to make it seem like the problem is yours, not theirs.

Be comforted, we have been there and we know it is.

Mike - I assume you are talking about me here as I was critical of Adgirl.  Her situation was not like Reality's.  The police actually met Adgirl at the airport as she was trying to skip out on her bills.   She is not owed a thing by her employer.  She screwed over her employer, her landlord, her friends and those that gave her credit at bars.  She jumped ship - she didn't get kicked off the island or refused a work permit etc..

It almost sounds like your defending Adgirl to give extra credibility or weight to Reality's story.  More fuel to add to the fire.  In this situation it's not warranted.  Adgirl has written a pack of lies and I'd appreciate it if you didn't suggest that I lack decency for calling her on her lies.

The problem was indeed Adgirl's not "theirs".  And I note you didn't criticize her for her personal attacks - just me for calling her the liar that she is.

Hope I'm not being too offensive.  Like you, I'm more inclined to speak my mind and think later.  But thought I'd bring it up as I don't think I lack empathy at all - and if you knew me, you'd agree.
