This morning at 7, near Waterlot. The gentleman lost control of his bike and hit a pole. Condolences to his family.

Thanks Alsys30, I missed the first part of the news and tuned in towards the end of that particular news item. I wasn't sure if I had heard correctly.

Some people I work with know him it seems.

From what I was told he suffered from seizures. He had a seizure while riding and lost control.

I was always under the impression that anyone that suffered from seizures couldn't get a drivers license.

In any case, condolences to the family.

Over the last 3 years there has been so many road deaths...when will the authorities step in and implement some initiatives?

Also condolences to the family.

"...when will the authorities step in and implement some initiatives?"  I don't think they have any idea what to do.... and if they actually do something, it likely will be "knee jerk," amateur, and incompetent.  Watch.... Sad Shocked Roll Eyes Cool

My condolences to the family included. As for the "authorities" come on Umust....they can only do so much.

With all the upheaval in Bermuda at this stage of the game, Robberies, Murders, Thefts, Assaults, Traffic Accidents et al, I think they are doing a damn good job considering.

It seems to impact more because the place is so small. Shit...call the the Royal Marines to give out tickets and everything everyone bitches and moans about.

Oh...thats right..............back to the Plantation. Show some relative support instead of bitching and moaning about evrything...............................

If the cause was a medical condition there's little the Police or anyone can do outside of already established rules.  Everyone slowing down, stop drinking and driving, don't drive in bad weather,all will help. It will also allow the Police to concentrate on the real abusers. Simple accidents will still happen and this case sounds simply like a terrible accident.

My sincere condolences to the family and friends as well.

I have a young son that suffers from seizures and this is precisely the type of thing that frightens me. What a tragedy.

Obviously, we don't yet know what the cause of this particular accident was but, generally speaking, there's little that the Government can do to reduce the number of accidents, simply because the cause of most accidents is reckless driving. It's a question of personal responsibility, plain and simple, in most cases. Here's how to reduce the number of traffic accidents in Bermuda:

(a) SLOW DOWN!!!!
(b) Stop overtaking on corners;
(c) Stop overtaking when there is oncoming traffic;
(d) Stop tailgating;
(e) Pay attention;
(f) Stop assuming that people will simply get out of your way.

It's not brain surgery, guys and gals............

I agree with your assessment Loki, but in the meantime there has to be an adequate deterrent for those who chose not to behave responsibly on the roads. My first ticket  back in 1986 saw me taken off the road for 18 months. You hardly hear of that anymore.

I think that the graduated points system, when properly implemented, will go some way towards taking care of the type of people who engage in the kind of driving behaviours that I've mentioned. One of the problems previously was that people could be repeatedly caught for 'minor' traffic offences, such as speeding below 60k, non-functioning equipment, bald tyres, etc, driving without due care, and they'd never be taken off the road, regardless of the number of previous offences, and it's these people - the repeat offenders - who are the most serious problem.

New here, (to posting, that is...)
Re: our appalling driving habits, agree that it comes down to really only one thing: Enforcement island wide (yes, need more road cop presence),  stiffer penalities,  and for repeat offenders, (say, 3rd time) SUSPENDED licenses with the added 'bonus' of your 'CLAMPED' vehicle in your front driveway.  Given how important our shiny cars and sporty bikes are, this would be a huge incentive to obey the rules of the road.  Driving is a PRIVILEDGE (not a right.....)

I accept the need for increased enforcement - but why does everyone look to the authorities to solve these problems?

Not the tragic case in this thread - but many of the others road deaths are a result of reckless driving, drinking and driving etc.

For the love of god - take some responsibility and POLICE YOURSELF....slow down, drive safer, don’t drink and drive........be responsible and stop looking always to others to make sure you do the right thing!!!

I accept that there will be a % of the driving population who will not be able to do the right thing and as such there will be a need for Police enforcement – but there are a hell of a lot more who could frankly be doing a lot better – and that includes all the drive homes after Friday night happy hour – you know who you are!... wacko....

I have driven in other countries were I have not even seen a police car for miles and miles of Road/Highway and guess what most drivers - obey the laws and drive safely! (The penalties are in fact less severe in these countries - so I don’t see that as the main deterrent.)

Why can't we seem to get that done here?
