Hello All,

I am looking for a good, low cost web host for a low-volume e-commerce site I am setting up.  I need to keep the costs low since I expect to be operating at very low sales volumes for at least the next year.  I will be able to get some decent tax benefits from the site so am not too concerned about running at a loss for the time being.
I consider myself pretty savvy at checking into products and service providers using Google but all my techniques are confounded when trying to research web hosts.  Most or all of them provide web PR services and from what I have seen them do for themselves I think I would rate them quite highly on this aspect of their businesses.  The usual background checks such as Googling "hostname + lawsuit", "hostname + sucks" "webhost review" or "hostname + fraud" seem to be completely confounded by these companies' tactics.  Most companies seem to have loaded the net with flase blogs lavishing strangely similar glowing reviews and even blogs that at first seem to contain negative reviews but instead heap lavish praise on the web host.  Even trying to find a page with honest reviews seems impossible since Google searches for reviews just return pages and pages of links to various "reviewers" who are in fact resellers who make a commission off selling or directing people to web hosts.

I could just go with an expensive host from a big name like yahoo or even my own ISP but these expensive hosts seem to be more directed at low-tech users who need a lot of support and easy to use interface but not a lot of features.  Since I am now completely paranoid over anything I read on other blogs on this subject I am turning to Bermuda Rocks in hopes of getting some advice and suggestions from some techies I know are legit.  Anybody have a host they would recommend?

Mike, I share your plight as well as your name... hosting providers suck.  I know what you mean about the fake reviews; between that and the name change game they play, it is really hard to find a credible host.

Most places are run by geeks who have no idea of what "change control" means.  I've had hair raising problems that shouldn't have happened, but inexperienced systems people running huge multi-site servers have been a real pain to me.

This site is hosted by GoDaddy.com and I've been happy with its performance and reliability - the second being the most important feature to me.  It is much more expensive than the host I use for development work (whom I wouldn't recommend to you as they purchased the original hosting company I was using as my backup, then promptly cut features and increased prices).

My advice would be to consider spending a bit more with one of the larger hosting outfits, if you feel that keeping your visitors looking at your web page rather than a 'server not available' message is important.

Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

Thanks Mike & Canuck,

I have heard good things about bluehost too (almost all fake unfortunately) and it appears that they have all the features I want included in their base price.  GoDaddy seems to be a good price and well established but it looks like extras are pricey and I can see myself finding out I have to pay triple what I originally thought after signing up for a 12 month plan.  Anybody have any experience with bluehost?  I am a bit suspicious of bluehost among a few others that are practically impossible to find real reviews on.

Hi Guys I always work with WebHost4Life, is not a cheap service but i can say it's awesome. Never go down, huge panel you can administer your IIS and everything and you can run both Php or NET.
I pay around 1 hundred every year for a shared server that is preatty good in my opinion.
Also the spam filter for your mailbox works very good.
