I don't know if anyone read this article in today's Gazette:

While it's written in defense of bus drivers this little snippet caught my eye:

Statistically in crash tests, with sharp driver time of 2.5 seconds to react, then brake, it takes about 175 feet to safely stop without locking up the wheels. One too close motorbike, one aimless pedestrian, at any time, catastrophe can happen.

That's about 140% of the speed limit. Slap

had a wee chuckle when i read that, as obviusly the lady in qeustion doesn't live on the number 7 route and try to get into work from around the south shore area cos she'd be waving at all those busses as they ride on by packed to the gills!

Hey - yeah, I read that too...I believe they were referring to the speed at which the buses pull out of their bays at the terminal in reverse....

By my calculations... in 2 1/2 seconds @ 30 mph the driver would have traveled 110 feet before the driver's foot even hits the break... that leaves, according to their numbers, only 65 feet to actually stop the bus. Only problem is, she couldn't possiblty stop a huge bus in 65 feet!! The motorbike would have been history about 50 feet ago... Can these jokers not get any numbers correct...??! They did go to school, right?? wacko
