Hi all. Im moving to Bermuda for a 2 year contract with my wife at end of August - so thought I would check in early!  Smiley I was wondering if this forum would be a good place to get advice - as I like to be prepared. For example what the best interent service provider is - decent speed, no silly caps etc., and which TV cable option is the best. Im clueless! I would need to get the internet set up as soon as I get there. Thanks in advance and hope to get to know you all! Im from Cape Town SA btw.

Hi Duncan.
What I did was to read through some of the other 'Introduce Yourself' threads first...most of what I needed was there, anything not there that you want, feel free to ask....good bunch of folks here.  They may not always agree with each other on politics and the like and, yes, it gets a bit naughty but in terms of helping and being a resource, it's as  good a place as any.
Internet speeds....plenty of choices, I go with these guys www.transact.bm at least the prices and speeds will let you know what you are in for....EXPENSIVE!!  DSL lines with phone are about $89/month on top.
TV, I go with www.wow.bm , satellite provider, there are others out there but this costs me $89.95/month and has a load of channels and I got the HBO/HBO2 package too.  again, there are others.
Welcome.

Thanks! I will looki through those. I have been spending the last hour reading through the posts trying to get some valuable info - great stuff! Thanks again! Those prices may be expensive compared to the US - but pretty cheap if you see what we are charged in South Africa - which is daylight robbery prices!  Wink

I read that daylight robbery is pretty common there too!! Seems like with the mayhem being reported there recently, this might be as good a time as any to come to this sleepy hollow!!
Happy travels and like I say, anything you need/want etc just ask, someone will direct you appropriately.

What are you and your wife coming to do??

Duncan - welcome to Sucks.  First K is on me.

As BlahBlah says, you can get answers to most of your questions here.  Don't worry if a lot of people, Bermudian and expat alike are more than slightly cynical.  Fact is, we're all on the island so it must have something going for it. Cheesy

Hi Duncan, welcome to the forum.

Keep asking your questions; somebody will be able to help you out.  This will give us a great opportunity to use the new Wiki to finally compile the "Moving to" stuff Wikigirl mentioned.

You sound like me, mate.  When I move in, the first thing I want is my stereo running, so I can listen to tunes to setup my computer and TV!  Boys will be boys.

Thanks everyone! You seem like a nice bunch of people. Yes SA is having a bit of a hard time at the moment but thats not the reason we're leaving. My wife got a contract at PWC and we thought we would try something new - a little adventure  Smiley

Bermuda will give you adventure, you won't be disappointed there.  That's a bit of a blessing and curse in one, though.

My best advice is to have clear goals regarding your stay there as an expat.  The financial side doesn't seem nearly as attractive after  you've been there for a year.  There are a lot of hidden costs (like the off-Island trips necessary to remind yourself the world is still out there), so be conservative on your savings expectations.

Many expats don't bother to mingle with Bermudians, and you can quite happily isolate yourself in a nice clique and pretend the problems others talk about simply don't exist.  The other approach is to seek out Bermudians in their activities and get to know them personally.  The problem there, many Bermudians have seen cycles of 'forners' come and go and they become weary of investing their emotional energy in somebody they know will be gone in a few years.  It isn't impossible to make close Bermudian friends, but it takes a lot of effort.

If you are able to contact potential employers for yourself, (assuming your wife is the only one with a work permit pending at this stage), you should make an effort to document your communications with the companies before you arrive on Island.  This avoids an extra Immigration cycle called the "Permission to Seek" phase whereby you have to pay and wait for them to allow you to make contact with local employers.

Too bad about your timing.  September can be a really nice month there, but October is usually iffy and by November, they've pretty well rolled up for the winter - the tourists won't be back in force until April.  The first winter isn't so bad, you are still enjoying all of the new things to really notice how damp and chilly the unheated houses are.

Thanks for the advice! I won't need to find work in Bermuda I have my own income from elsewhere. I presume that isnt an issue. We are well aware of the salary not being good enough to save a lot of money - but we will be happy if we can go out and socialize, and make the occasional trip off the island to keep sane Smiley. If it was all for the money and not lifestyle we would be heading for London. The timing unfortunately is beyond our control - thats when the intake is. We would have preferred to come in March already.

They have system that you can rent (DVR??), my mate has it and it's the same as Tivo.  I don't have it but it's something like $29/month.
I'm the antithesis of a techie nerd so it could be that Tivo itself is hookupable, no idea.

I'm no techie either... but I believe you need a "call-back box" and must use a special phone number if you're gonna use tivo.  And each call is long distance.  Other members will have the scoop on that one, though....  Smiley Cool
