Thanks all for being so helpful! Its hard to work out what the best solutions are without being there yet. Especially internet - seems there are so many options and I have no idea which the best are or have the best service. I see the cable co's offer an internet connection too but you have to have an ISP as well? I guess I have a lot to learn

I've got no real complaints with them but then I didn't when I had cablevision either, I only switched when cable moved to digital or whatever and I had to do something (I had a free feed....but don't tell anyone!!).
I think there are some bundles that you can get too, i.e. phone, internet, long distance carrier, etc etc...I'm just too lazy and can't be bothered to constantly search out a better deal.
Certainly Wow have been good for me.  They had problems recently and they were really good about adjusting my bill for lost service and giving me a replacement receiver etc.

That counts as a terrific endorsement in Bermuda.

Welcome Duncan - i'm sure you'll enjoy Bermuda and I know there are quite a few from South Africa.  I also know that a few of them have issues with travelling - going to the States and what have you as you have to apply for Visas - so you can't just 'hop off' the island any time the mood suits you unless you're well prepared.

As for your cable provider, there are two cable providers on the island - WOW and Cablevision (both have web sites)  www.wow.bm and www.cablevision.bm - both will give you the low down on prices and what they provide.

As to whether you can get both providers where you eventually live - it may be that you have to go with one or the other depending on what the lines are to your new apartment.

I see you don't plan on working - I don't know about you but that would drive me nuts being at home all day unless you have some great interests.  It does get cold (and I think quite dull) in the winter months - there's only so much of a 21 square mile island you can see.

Anyway, good luck and fire away with the questions - we're a mine of information here!

Ha ha! Im used to bad service - lived with it my whole life in Cape Town. Will be more of the same I guess.   Tongue Just have to be patient and realize it will all probably get sorted out at some point.

Thanks! Yeah I have plenty to keep me busy. I have already sorted out my 10 year multi entry US visa so I can hop over to the States. It would just be the cost of it so won't be doing that every week! Smiley I guess Ill have to wait and see where I can find a decent 1br apartment - to see what TV I can get. Im hoping I can find something reasonable - been keeping an eye on prices at e-moo. Hard to find something under 2k that would be half decent I guess - especially cos Im bring my 2 cats - yes I know - but they are family!

Hey Duncan... if you are bringing your cats with you (I'm a cat & dog lover too) you might want to read this.

Yeah thanks! This I did look into a few months ago already, and I have made sure their Rabies shots are up to date, I had them chipped (robo-kitties now!) etc. Im pretty sure Im on top of it all - just need to get another rabies shot before we leave and get the imprt permit. Im a little nervous that they get turned away - besides the obvious they also are gonna cost $1800 to ship!

Great overview Val.  I've added that gem to the Wiki here.

@ Duncan - you'll have to let us know... Bermuda might be able to go with the new slogan:

Duncan, I worked at PwC a few years ago (but not as an accountant).  They were a great company to work for and the people there were brilliant.  I hope your wife enjoys it.  She'll probably be putting long hours in during audit season though (I assume she's an accountant as August tends to be when they bring in their new crop)..

Best of luck with the move!

Thanks so much! Yes she is an accountant. She is obviously a bit nervous with new job, friends etc. but she will be fine. She is very social and outgoing. One of her best friends has been on the island for 3 years already so that will help too Smiley She already told me I won't be seeing her much during audit season - so Ill have to find a hobby I guess. Maybe Ill try learn golf!

Or scuba diving, or sailing - loads of things to do here!  There's also a lot of volunteer things you can try, if you're interested.  Loads of 'accountants widows' do that to stay busy during the day.  The website is http://www.centreonphilanthropy.org/ - it lists all the local charities that need volunteers.

You might want to ask your wife's friend to keep an eye and ear out for places to live (if she isn't doing so already) - believe most of the other audit firms on the island tend to have their big influx of new staff coming in around the same time so finding good places for reasonable rent might be a challenge if you wait until you get here.  A lot of good places tend to go through word of mouth as well so if she hears of anyone that has a fab place that will be leaving when you are coming, you may want to have her put in a good word for you, give you the edge over the competition!
