First, have a K on me.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that this is Bermuda, not Ireland, not London, not ...

Things are different from your home here, not necessarily better or worse, just different.  Enjoy it for what it is as opposed to being upset about what it is not.  The latter is a guarantee that you won't like it here.

Hi there - and welcome,

You can buy draft Guiness - if that helps. If it doesn't - Dark & Stormy is the national drink (dark rum and ginger beer).

Hi bigmac, welcome to Bermuda Sucks.

The members here are a great resource for your questions.  If you have any more specific queries as your departure date gets closer, feel free to post here and I'm sure you'll get a response.

The "lifestyle in general"?  That really depends on what you like and what you do.  There are lots of things to see and do in Bermuda for the first year or so, but with only 21 square miles to explore, it doesn't take long until you've done the rounds.

As an expat it is pretty easy to be happily oblivious of most of the real problems on the Island.  There are lots of other expats (mostly single guys and smug-married couples I'm sorry to tell you), with whom you'll be able to commiserate.  The tourist season is from April to November, so there are the weekly visitors to play with during those months.  The off-season is cold and damp, but after Ireland you'll probably think it not so bad - for the first year.

Remember that any compensation plan will seem like a great deal, but with the already ridiculous expenses and Bermuda's spiraling inflation, well, lets just say that you are more likely there for experience than for a payday.  You have looked at the costs for a quick trip back home, right?  laugh

well im not really in it for money and yes i have looked at the cost alright. lack of single women doesn't sound great tho.lol. im looking forward to it but as you can imagine a bit nervous as well. COLD? u say in the off season. i don't think it will be as wet and cold as it is here in Ireland. anyway i might run into you when I get there in August. i have one contact for a guy who owns the irish bar. is it flanagans?

Aye, the 'Irish' bar is named Flanagan's.  It used to have the worst food on Front Street, but I wouldn't know since I escaped the Island over a year ago - you'd only run into me if you happened to visit Australia!

Do you have central heating at your place in Ireland?  If not, you'll be right at home in Bermuda.   Wink

You are in for some interesting times on the dating front... I've only experienced the same disproportionate ratio of men to women at technology conferences.  But, that's only the beginning of the challenge in Bermuda.  We really should write a book on that subject!

Mike man
you say escaped like you couldn't wait to get outta there. i take it you didnt have the best time of ure life. but here you are a year later still advising people on bermuda. so it must have been ok. well i guess i'll have to find out for myself. the lack of women is the worst news i have had in a while. plus the expenses. nightmare. well as long as i can take a dip in the sea, have enough for a few pints and maybe snag a bird i'll be happy out. simple pleasures for a simple man.

Mac, I didn't know Mike when he was here.  But a couple of points.  First, and perhaps most importantly, he met his wife here [she posts as Reality if you haven't figured that out yet].  And secondly he spent quite a few years here.

In addition to my opening point about enjoying Bermuda for what it is, you have to remember that anyplace you live has its pluses and minuses.  As long as the pluses outweigh the minuses, you stay.

I've been making both points to expats coming here for as long as I've been senior enough to be involved in the interviewing process.  And as long as you understand what both those statements mean, you'll be fine.

And, although he still doesn't know me, it doesn't stop him from trying to speak for me.  He's all right though; just another one of the rich executives who thinks he's got it figured out when he doesn't realize he's been working on the wrong problem all along.   Wink

I did meet my soul mate Reality in Bermuda and this whole website is the story of our love affair.  Very long story short, our love was stronger than Bermuda Immigration department and I walked away from a spectacular lifestyle and the dream key-person job I'd built over the 11 years I spent on that damn Rock to be with the woman I love.  I'll write the long version one day, but so far I've only had an offer for the TV version - I'm holding out for the feature.   Grin

Since you can't possibly have a basis for understanding the points Blanks is trying to make, keep asking the specific questions.  One of the goals of this site is to provide you with a realistic idea of what to expect - not just the pink sand and turquoise water version you'll get elsewhere.

Mike, the food at Flanagans is still horrible.

Also bigmac, there are single ladies here to be found, you just have to go looking for them  Wink.  The new guys in my office seem to manage to find girls quite quickly so I wouldn't worry if I were you.

Long as you come here with an open mind and remember that Bermuda definitely is Another World - you should be ok.  You can sometimes get a cheap flight to the States to cure your island fever (I went to Boston a few weeks ago and my ticket was only $300).

Start looking on websites like emoo now for a place to stay (www.bermuda.e-moo.com.  If you're coming in August, you'll be coming in around the same time the new wave of accountants arrives to restock the audit firms so competition may be fierce for a reasonable place to live (hmm, is this an indication of what your new job is?).

Feature film... ? He makes it sound more like a country song  Shocked

Needless to say, Bermuda played an important part in my and mike's history and we retain a soft spot for the place, warts & all.

In Bermuda you can have the best and worst of times. A lot depends on your work environment and situation. It also helps if you don't get caught up in the whole 'keeping-up-with-the-Joneses' scenario, unless you have a Perot-level income. Your taste for the simple things will help (especially if you meet my ex boss) but even they can be staggeringly expensive. Check prices in the supermarket, evenif it is painful. I think there are some examples on the Bermudapedia. Good luck...oh and welcome to Sucks.
