Hey, there Macster, I'm glad to hear you found yourself a place, because I haven't heard doodle-squat from the folks back home.
Well, remember about Hubert's Bar, because that's a simple place to get a vantage onto Bermuda.
Learn snorkelling if you don't know, get out in the water. It's a hell of a sight. My wife is Dublin northsider and she was very much wowed by the fish when we were out there in October couple years back. Angelfish coming up to check us out and all.
Oh, and the railway trail, that runs nicely through Warwick, that's some good walking territory.
Heh heh heh. You're right, it's intense when you actually have the date and the tickets and all. I arrived over here in Ireland January 8, 2002, no clue what to expect. That was an intense six months. Great excuse to drink way too much, heh heh.
Good luck, man. Come on here and let us know what you make of the place. I don't know, you sound like you're in a position to really like it. It's got some crazy varieties of people. I don't know about GAA but I've heard it's there all right. Remember hearing an ad for "hurling" on the radio and wondering what in god's name they were talking about. Yep, it took me a while to catch on about the hurling thing. I got to Ireland and started working in Chapters and there I was wondering why "lacrosse" was so popular in Ireland. Got pretty slated for that one, too.
Stay cool, Bigmac, and you'd best hope this rain clears up over here. We were having a good one. Now it's sunshine of the strictly liquid kind. See ya on the flipside ...

It's still hot right now and will be for the next few months.  You'll still have plenty of beach weather, no worries.

Only Friday night hotspot I can think of which is sort of in your area is the Veranda Bar at Elbow Beach Hotel.  They do an all you can eat curry buffet and salsa dancing on Friday nights and the place is usually packed.  Get there early enough for a quick dance lesson, then boogie the night away.  There's also the Swizzle South Shore.  There was a shooting there when it first opened a year or two ago but I haven't heard anything since.  I've never been there but I imagine that if it is still a dodgy place, someone else on here will let you know if I have led you astray.  Apologies in ad\/ance if I have.

Otherwise, all the best action is in town, which is close to Warwick, especially if you take Burnt House Hill to get onto Harbour Road.  Burnt House Hill is very near Whites in Warwick.  If it isn't rush hour, it's a quick and scenic drive.

Hey Wassup / Bigmac,

Just an update on the South Shore Swizzle, it's a great place to hang out, specially on a Friday night after work for a wind down, i go there quite a lot (well at least once a month which is a lot for me as i don't get out much - sad git that i am)!  Foods good and not overly priced, great if you have a few friends to hang out with there.

Verandah bar is also good (at Elbow) don't get there much but it is a lovely place to have a drink with friends and the views are pretty awesome.  Otherwise, BM, it all depends on your age really and what you're looking for, if you're young free and single then the place to be on a Friday night would definately be town - Cafe Cairo, Pickled Onion etc for a pretty wild night.

Gonna have to visit Whites now just to check out out new pharmacist and welcome him to Bermuda!

 I Approve

Hey ya Bigmac: I agree with Valentine (@ Val: where ya been lady?? Glad to se ya back!)

Swizzle South Shore is an AWESOME place to grab a drink or food. The people there are great and it's a little less crowded and crazy.

I'm in Warwick and it's great little Parish, other than Elbow and Swizzle, there's not much more 'close to home' BUT - this island is so small that almost everything is 'close to home'! And cab rides back from town are like $10!!! (Don't drink and drive!)

Another favoriute thing to do when the weather is good (which is often) is grab a cooler full of brews and cop a squat on the closest beach!

I have recently succumbed to the Friday night craziness known as Happy Hour (all this means is after your first hour at Princess, you will have drunk enough to be really happy ALLLLLL night long!!! Although that does not seem to stop me!) It's pure messy craziness!

Now *I* will have to sneak a peek at the new pharmacist up at White's - hahahaha! Just so I can recognize ya at Happy Hour!

cheers folks
for the low down on my soon to be new home. im nervous as hell. but looking forward to it. stepping out on my own is always going to be scary i reckon. but ye gotta get outta the comfort zone to c what u r made off. the after work drinks and beach beers sounds just the ticket i am looking for. and do drop into whites and say hi. i'll not know a soul on the rock so a hello could cheer me right up. i'll be the tall irish man with either the pale skin or red like a lobster depending on how long ive been there.
well i do know one girl out there. but she lives at the other end o island and is a good bit older than meself. she hails from the same part ireland as me. anyway let me know anything you might believe could help me. even if its small. hope to run into to you soon.

Bigmac, according to the Irish in my office - you can watch it at the Beach or at Docksiders.

Wow! well this turned into quite the comprehensive thread. bigmac mate, sounds like you're heading over with the right sort of attitude; but if you're anything like any of my Irish mates back home (ie. easygoing, love a good drink, love your sports and have a self-deprecating sense of humour) then you are bound to enjoy your time in Bermy. As a relative 'newbie' to the island (going on a few months now) I have to agree with pretty much all the advice everyone has given you (don't let the url fool you, for the most part the majority of people like it here, and the members on this forum (we?) are a pretty good bunch. SOME of the locals can be a little paradoxical in nature, but you get that wherever you are in the world. Yes the island is expensive, but it all depends on how you spend your money. For a small place the nightlife is pretty damn good really and there are a decent number of places to go. Heck i've barely been on the net (and therefore not posted much) since i got there (I'm off-island at the moment) because I was kept busy exploring the island, culture and nightlife. There are also plenty of good-looking ladies how many of them are single, I cannot say though. As you pointed out, it can sometimes be a bit difficult meeting people outside of work, so I (as others have no doubt already done) will put myself out there as saying that I as an Aussie male (25) am just about always up for some beers and footy at the pub.

Lastly I too found it a little daunting, but very exhilirating at the same time, when I moved over from Australia. Many of my mates thought I was nuts moving to the opposite pole of the earth, to a country i'd never been to and didn't know a single soul. But I for one thought that was half the fun.

So good luck with the move!
