Mike

This does no more than reaffirm what has been said so far.

The site is faster in the AM, and slows considerably during the day. Today, for e.g. it took 95 secs to go from log-on to this thread. Doesn't sound much - but jinks it feels a long time!

I'm running at avg 1.6/1.7 m download speed.

Now now Rummy, some of us still have to work for a living, and we can't be sitting for 93 seconds between tasks. This multi-tasking kills me at times and I have no idea if I am coming or going.

Between 10 am and 3pm seems to be when it is at it's worst. Outside of these times it seems to function "normally". I can't beat 93 seconds though. I generally give up counting after 30, or I get the message that I posted earlier.

Anyone else noticed some hiccups on the "unread posts" feature? I have pm'd Mike, and he confirmed that godaddy are doing some work on their side which may result in some "funky" returns, but wondering if it is just me that is encountering this.

Mike

This does no more than reaffirm what has been said so far...

Thanks, Martin.  I'm glad you took the time to keep me updated.

GoDaddy has made some changes lately, and it looks like we are suffering as a result.  My option is to upgrade to a non-shared server that won't slow down during the prime-time.  That will add significantly to the hosting costs, but I'm prepared to do it to ensure we can continue to grow without further performance concerns.  I expect to be able to address this move after Labour day, once we've returned to Australia.  I may be able to come up with a work around in the meantime.

Please continue to advise me regarding the performance of the site.  What I would be specifically interested to know is if while you are waiting during the long time-out, if the lite site loads.  That would help me understand if it is a server performance concern (as I suspect) or a bandwidth problem.

Mike it would appear that the "adicicts" [meant in the nicest of ways] ... who me? ... no ... no "I" don't have a problem ... need a faster response time ... no ... no ... I don't have a problem ... take those 12 steps "away" ... far far away!

The site isn't only slow to load but it regularly gives me strange error messages

Quote

Line: 97Database Error: MySQL server has gone away

Usually all I have to do is hit the refresh button but there are times that I have to leave the site and come back.

I've had that message before as well Blankman, and I think I posted it earlier in the thread.

My only comment is that is has happened earlier in the day than usual. It normally starts to go loopy around 10am, but today it started before 9am

The key to understanding the error message is the following line:

"MySQL server has gone away"

That means the "yt_splitmenu.php" file, called from "load.php" on the local machine was unable to connect to the server at GoDaddy.  That can occur for various reasons, including the server being too busy to respond in the time-out period, or the connection to the server being too busy to allow the traffic to pass.

I'm seeing 20-25 second response time to load a page just now with around 25 users online.  I'm looking at the problem to see if I can more clearly identify it now that I can see some performance change myself.

Mike,

Just to add to one of your earlier questions, the issue on the main site seems to be reflected on the "lite" site as well, since the response time is up to 10 seconds plus compared to instantly from earlier this morning. (same computer used for the comparison)
