Alsys ... no he is not.

This won't stop any reckless individual from risking their life (and the lives of their potential rescuers ... government employed or not).

What is required is stiff fines for anyone acting with such reckless abandon whether they get into trouble on the water or not.  They have to come back to shore sometime ... nab them and fine them that should deter more folk than the threat of no rescue ... well no government paid for rescue at least.

sand, seriously. It was a soundbite, not a law. And a lot of people agree with him but perhaps would have not said it that way. What those people (not just the 16 year old!) did was reckless and to have it glorified on the front page of the newspaper is sheer stupidity.

If his words makes someone think twice about putting their own and possibly that of others on the line for some cheap thrill then honestly, I applaud him.

Well guys and gals....yah nut going to draw me into another...yoo no vat.

Re-read your comments. Trained or whatever ther is a line and common sense palys a big part. Emotions? Thats is what is being portrayed here.

Put yourselves in a position that may require you to relingquish your life or just make attempts that may save one.

It's good on paper/computors but it is differant and heartfelt when you have no choice.

It's called "life" and some/most loose sight of it in their hurry to go nowhere.

Yeah... who died and made the Colon God? Undecided

For crissake the guy's not wrong for getting hard-ass on the dimwits who choose to put themselves at risk of drowning or getting their faces ground into the rocks but Darkside is 100% correct in that his little bravado freak out is absolutely bull crap. First he has absolutely no legal leg to stand on. If someone looks like they're in trouble and someone dials 911 the police/rescue services will have to show up. Once they are there then they and only they can make the decision as to whether it's too risky to send someone in. That's it.

Imagine all the law suits the government would face if the rescue services just went by Burch's statement today. Better save the sorry sod and sue him or her for the troubles they caused.

Burch has got to learn to stop being such a priss if he wants people to respect what he's really trying to accomplish.

As to the pics on the front page.... I thought was one of Ewart's latest ad campaigns: "Hurricane's a coming... Surfs Up Dudes!"

Here's an idea. They should make it a law that if you go surfing/swimming during hurricane force winds and a rescuer has to be dispatched, then you have to pay for the rescue (like the states...). Also, if said rescuer is hurt or killed than you are charged with manslaughter.

Do whatever silly things you want but don't take responsibility for your actions... oh no.

Surfers routinely surf waves bigger than those from Bertha.  Just because the cause of the waves is a hurricane doesn't mean they are somehow worse than a big Pipeline curl.  Those waves were perfectly safe for a competent swimmer and a reasonably competent surfer.

Big deal.  If surfers want to surf those waves then more power to them.  If the rescuers decide it's too dangerous to effect a rescue then they're on their own.  That's what the signs are telling you, surf at your own risk.

What a bunch of pussies we've become.  Live a little.

People can make their own choices.  Burch is a real nanny state kind of guy.

Spin... the only way we get decent waves is due to heavy weather. Our little ring of reefs keeps us nice and safe. I gotta a sneaking feeling Burch must have got himself a wedgy when playing in the surf at Warwick Long Bay. Wink

Alsys..... you hit the nail right on the head. Good thing Darkside had it lined up for you in his first sentence.... Wink

So, OK, Burch is effectively banning surfing?

Do we stop kite surfing when it's windy, do we tell sailors not to sail above a certain wind speed, do we tell the motorcyclists that their racing bikes will have speed limiters fitted? Let's change cricket balls and make them out of sponge so that there's no danger of being knocked out. Damn all those divers too, what about the bends? Nanny state indeed.

Alsys - take responsibility? Jesus. Don't make me f*&King LAUGH! This is Bermuda, the land of not taking responsibility.

Coffee meet nose ... too funny Rummy ... yea I can see it now ... "Person drowns attempting to avoid arrest for reckless watersports during storm"

I like Alsys's proposal ... charge them with the manslaughter of their rescuer should said rescuer die.

I never said not to make the foolhardy accountable ... just don't make them pay for it with their lives if this can be avoided.

C'mon DS. We're not talking about kids here - and if you don't know that your kid is out surfing during a hurricane, then you need a cut azz... Maybe they should do like they do for people who try going over Niagara Falls...fine em, jail em, and charge em for the rescue operation.

As the daughter of a rescue worker I'd be pretty pissed off if my father had lost his life during a 'rescue' operation for somebody who thought the swell from Hurricane Whatitsname looked groovy.

Right Sand.  The only time you can surf in Bermy is when a storm comes by, so the surfers come out for the fun stuff.

No surfer expects a rescue squad to be stationed on the beach for them.  Half the time they're surfing before the lifeguards start (10AM) and after they finish (6PM) so they know the risks and take them willingly.  I have no problem with that.  It's a sport.  Some sports are dangerous.

Should we shut down the motorbike racing track.  People have actually died on that in Bermuda.  How many people have died surfing a hurricane swell in Bermuda?  Motorsports are far more dangerous.

What about rugby.  I know a couple of guys who've broken their necks playing rugby.

I know a guy who had a heart attack and died lifting weights.  He was in his 30s.  Should we ban weightlifting?

What say you Burch?

This is such a non-story.

Hey!!! Rummy nut bean funny. Just sit back, reflect on what it's all about.

BREAKING NEWS................Minister of Home Affairs and the Minister of Transportation have just revealed after numerous consultations and input that people lying in the 'third lane' will not be attended too. Broken mirrors, abandoned vehicles will not be removed as this will cause an interruption of the traffic flow.

Mr. Spencer from TCD says and I quote...."juss keep tooo dee laft". ( Mr. Spencer and I go back a long way, in fact, he grew up just to be like me).

Anyway....the surf is up, attitudes also.

Remember...if you see some lying on the road or yelling for help from the beach.....just be the good Onion and call Vurks and Hinjaneering........if not call Hott whatever........

I need a rum................................

Just remember what a great man said once....it's not what you do on a wave.........it's how you get the 'rave'.............................

Gotta run.....................Elbow  Beach in trouble...........needs ah replacement.......................... Slap Wink

Accountability is as accountability does, sand. I can't make someone else accountable but I can be accountable myself.  *shrugs*
